Iran Condemns Israel's Closure of Al-Aqsa Mosque

The attack took place near the al-Aqsa mosque compound, also known as the Temple Mount or Haram al-Sharif, in Jerusalem's Old City.

"Israel and the Jerusalem police, in particular, are complicit in violating the ban on non-Muslim worship on the holy esplanade", he added. Mount preachers are notorious for using Friday night sermons to incite against Israel - especially with false claims of Israeli threats to the Al Aqsa Mosque - and there was fear here that the services could have been used to instigate further violence on the Mount following Friday's terrorist attack at the site.

Three Palestinian citizens allegedly fired on police units near the Lions' Gate, a popular religious site in the area.

Israeli authorities say most of the Palestinians killed were carrying out knife, gun or car-ramming attacks.

Netanyahu signalled later in the day that the site would remain closed until at least Sunday.

However the United States appeared to lend their support to the move, noting that it was temporary and saying it believed that Israel does not intend to change the delicate status quo that governs Jewish and Muslim prayer on the site, in Jerusalem's Old City.

Jerusalem's vibrant Old City, a UNESCO world Heritage Site since 1981, is home to sites important to many different religions: the Dome of the Rock and Al-Aqsa mosque for Muslims, Temple Mount and the Western Wall for Jews, and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre for Christians.

Three people were wounded in the shooting, two of them critically, police had said.

Two Israeli police officers, Sergeant Major General Haiel Stawi, 30, and Lieutenant-Colonel Kamil Shanan, 22, both from predominantly Druze communities in northern Israel, were killed in Friday's attack. The attackers were from the Arab Israeli city of Umm al-Fahm, located near the occupied West Bank.

An aide to the mufti said he was later detained by police at the Old City.

Israel has also approved the construction of 71 housing units in the Arab Al-Sawahra Palestinian neighbourhood, and 29 others in Sharafat, according to Maariv.

Following the shooting, Israeli forces blockaded the mosque compound, not allowing worshippers into the area. It later annexed the city in 1980, claiming all of Jerusalem as the Jewish state's "eternal" capital - a move never recognized by the global community.

It is the holiest site to Jews and the third holiest in Islam.Since September 2015, Palestinian attackers have killed 43 Israelis, two visiting Americans and a British tourist. Violent clashes on the Temple Mount have been the spark for prolonged and deadly waves of Israeli-Palestinian violence in the past.
