Group documents civilian catastrophe in Mosul

The report was released a day after Iraqi Prime minister Haider al-Abadi declared victory for the Iraqi-led forces in the ISIS stronghold city of Mosul nearly three years since the the terrorist group captured the city.

Iraqi forces, supported by the Global Coalition against Daesh, had launched an offensive to drive out the terror group out of the northern Iraqi city.

Iraqi forces, backed by a US -led coalition, had since last October been battling to dislodge Daesh from Mosul, the terrorist group's last stronghold in northern Iraq.

He said that the development marked a major milestone in the fight against ISIS.

"Right now, there are a handful of holdout ISIS terrorists that the Iraqi security forces are still trying to root out of the Old City", Scrocca said.

The operation to retake Mosul has left most of the city in ruins leading to thousands of civilian casualties and displaced around a million people.

"The victory in Mosul" signals Islamic State's "days in Iraq and Syria are numbered", Trump said in a statement praising Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi.

Townsend, who heads the anti-IS coalition, added that discussions were in the final decision-making stages.

In the report, Amnesty International said the Islamic State militant group has used civilians as human shields, forcing them from neighboring villages into battle zones in west Mosul.

USA -backed Iraqi forces have gradually retaken much of that territory, but at a staggering cost, with hundreds of thousands of people displaced, entire neighborhoods reduced to rubble and landmarks shattered beyond recognition. "They need shelter, food, health care, water, sanitation and emergency kits". ISIS is an evil enemy who will resort to any lengths to maintain their hold on the territory they claim as their caliphate, Townsend said.

"From here, from the heart of the liberated and free Mosul, by the sacrifices of the Iraqis from all the provinces, we declare the great victory for all of Iraq and Iraqis", CNN quoted al-Abadi as saying. They were in possession of sophisticated weapons and have, reportedly, taken over most of the village which situated on the western bank of the Tigris River some 44 miles south of Mosul. It said leaflet drops warning of attacks had been virtually useless because Islamic State heavily restricted civilian movement.
