DHS Approves 15000 Additional Temporary Worker Visas

The US government is allowing 15,000 additional visas for temporary seasonal workers to help American businesses in danger of suffering irreparable harm because of a shortage of such labour, the Department of Homeland Security said on Monday.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said this is aimed mainly at better tracking visa overstays and also at tightening security.

Many seasonal businesses and members of Congress have pleaded with Kelly to issue the visas, citing an urgent need for workers.

Kelly said there are not enough qualified workers available to American businesses for fiscal year 2017.

Josh Bass, president of the Currituck Chamber of Commerce, which covers the northern section of North Carolina´s popular Outer Banks Atlantic seashore, said the shortage of H-2B visas had made things for hard for local businesses, and caused at least one to shut down.

Employers had been complaining about the need for workers since March, when they exhausted the official cap of 66,000 H2B visas per fiscal year.

While he was still serving in the Senate, Attorney General Jeff Sessions past year sent a letter to the Senate Appropriations Committee asking them not to dramatically increase the number of H-2B visas as the House had done in a temporary spending bill.

In June seven senators representing states with important summer vacation destinations asked DHS to double the number of H-2B visas. "They were part-time jobs".

"This is yet another example of the administration and Congress failing to keep the Trump campaign promise of putting American workers first", he said.

Still, senior DHS officials insisted the policy fits Trumps self-styled "America First" agenda because it will help American businesses.
