Cities across the province stepping up to accept wildfire evacuees

A number of B.C. wildfires were fueled by heavy winds Saturday, leading to a number of new evacuation orders.

Residents of Williams Lake, BC have been told to leave their homes because of a wildfire burning near the community that is being fanned by high winds.

Lucy Lorenzetto, who fled her home in Williams Lake overnight, stood outside clutching a blue blanket, a plastic bag full of toiletries and a paper cup full of coffee. "We've gotten too good at fighting fires".

While fire activity has ramped up in the past few weeks, Skrepnek said, 2017 is not an unusual intense fire season. "If you are able to go to one of those other centres, that would be very much appreciated". "They should be thinking about their life and safety first". He loaded up his auto for the trip with a few of his belongings, important papers, photographs, and an urn containing the ashes of his wife Jesse, who died a few years ago. "Where do you start and where do you stop with a little vehicle".

Thousands of residents were ordered to leave the central Interior city of Williams Lake and numerous communities surrounding it on Saturday night as fire lines threatened to cut off nearby highways.

The evacuation comes after the fire at White Lake jumped the Fraser River at the Rudy Johnson Bridge Saturday afternoon.

OJ Simpson's parole hearing next week
On Thursday, the board will consider parole on the other charges, including kidnapping, robbery, and assault with a deadly weapon. Judge Jackie Glass sentenced Simpson in 2008 to 33 years in prison, allowing for the possibility of parole after nine years.

Penticton Community Centre isn't just exclusively available to Williams Lake evacuees.

Robert Turner of Emergency Management B.C. said about 9,430 of the estimated 16,250 evacuees had registered with the Canadian Red Cross. "(Kamloops) had the influx of people coming up from Ashcroft and Cache Creek so they're feeling the stress at the moment of all the work they're having to do.

"If you are talking to your friends and family in the Williams Lake area as I am still trying to get my mom and relatives out of that area, very stubborn".

The district is asking residents to use Highway 97 South to Highway 24 towards Little Fort and then Kamloops.

"The lineup of traffic, of people, leaving the city was incredibly long".

"We all packed, we had a week or so to get ready for this", said LaChance.

"In general, we are broadly encouraging people to stay out of the backcountry, to be perfectly frank", he added.
