China bans Winnie-the-Pooh

It's also claimed that GIFs featuring the Hundred Acre Wood bear have also been removed from WeChat, a messaging service used by 889 million people in the country. Weibo is China's bigger-than-Twitter microblogging platform.

While authorities have not explained the recent clampdown, observers believe the long-standing joke could be the reason for Winnie the Pooh being blocked once again in China.

According to the Financial Times, searches on Chinese social network Sina Weibo for "Little Bear Winnie" - which is the name given to Pooh Bear in China - resulted in an error message reading "content is illegal".

He noted that internet users in the mainland have been detained in the past over posts that comments about the president.

"I think the Winnie issue is part of this trend", he added. And it's not the first time he's done it.

She hit her second shot at the par-4 17th about six feet from the cup and made birdie to take a two-shot lead at 11-under. With a powerfully fluid swing, she is fifth on tour in driving distance, slamming it out there more than 274 yards a pop.

The first light-hearted comparison between Xi and Pooh reportedly first surfaced in 2013 when Obama met with the Chinese leader, and netizens compared the former to Pooh's lanky friend Tigger.

Earlier, some social media users compared the meeting between Chinese premiere and Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who was pictured as Eeyore, the sad donkey, alongside Pooh bear.

In 2014, a photograph of Mr Xi standing through the roof of a parade vehicle was set alongside Pooh in a toy auto. In 2015, according to Global Risk Insights, an image of President Xi standing up through a vehicle roof during a parade and a children's toy auto was the most censored image of the year, prompting the Chinese government to add "Winnie the Pooh" to its internet search blacklist. A similar picture of Winnie the Pooh in a toy auto soon surfaced online drawing another comparison of the Chinese leader to the cartoon character.

But this is a crucial period for President Xi Jinping.
