Chancellor Angela Merkel rejects refugee limit for Germany in TV interview

Asked in a television interview by ARD public broadcaster about her investment plans and Schulz's criticism, Merkel said: "We now can not spend the money that we have".

A win in September would be an historic victory for her and her party, but she faces a challenge from the country's centre-left SDP, led by former ex-European parliament president Martin Schulz. While the French leader lauded Germany for undertaking labor-market reforms in a newspaper interview earlier the same day, he signaled Germany's competitive strength also derived from imbalances in the euro area that had helped weaken other member states.

"It's important to me that the citizens have a true choice", Merkel said.

"For many people, including myself, something changed when we saw the Britons want to leave, when we were anxious about the outcome of the elections in France and the Netherlands", Merkel told voters, some of whom wore straw hats with black-red-and-gold hatbands, the colors of the German flag. She pointed to planning and capacity bottlenecks in the construction industry as well as at the level of regional authorities.

Merkel's response in both cases has been to say that her Christian Democratic-led coalition with the SPD has already increased spending "massively" on roads, broadband expansion and pre-schools.

South Korean President Moon Jae-In calls for rare talks with North
South Korea's Defense Ministry made the offer on Monday morning, the first since Moon Jae-in became the South's president. North Korea gets most of its fuel from China, with some coming from Russian Federation .

"We organized this together with the mayor, a social democrat, of the port city, Olaf Scholz, who has been an avalanche of criticism following the incident, including the part of the local branch of the conservative party of chancellor merkel, the CDU".

"We say, for example, that we have to use at least one third of the additional tax revenues for investment".

Many people in the past had taken the European Union and its advantages for granted - such as freedom of speech, freedom of religion and freedom to travel, said Merkel who grew up in communist East Germany. "But we also must be able to get everything built on the ground".

Merkel said the riots were absolutely unacceptable but it was still right to have invited G20 leaders to Hamburg. "For this, I have the same responsibility as Olaf Scholz does - and I'm not dodging", she added.

Merkel's comments, made in a speech in the Baltic Sea resort town of Zingst two months before a federal election, underline her personal determination to deepen European integration if she is re-elected for a fourth term.
