Champion says rain during Honda Indy 'might make the racing better'

"Every race vehicle driver has an ego and I think qualifying is all about ego", he said.

Australia's defending champion Will Power has crashed out during the opening lap at the IndyCar race at Exhibition Place in Toronto, won by Josef Newgarden.

"We were catching Alexander (Rossi) and Josef (Newgarden) in that last stint", Hinchcliffe said.

"I love Hinch. He's a great representative, but this is so good", Newgarden said. Newgarden was running fourth when he made his first stop for fuel and tires on Lap 23, seconds before Tony Kanaan ran into the Turn 1 tire barrier to bring out the caution flag and pit lane was closed.

Newgarden claimed his fifth career victory, also winning in Alabama in April.

Newgarden, driving the No. 2 Chevrolet for Team Penske, arrived in Canada 56 points out of the points lead.

"Thank you to the guys and thank you to Tim [Cindric] for making that call".

"Unfortunately, we ended up in the wall".

"Obviously a year ago getting in the Fast Six was pretty good for us, best start that we've had here, and to match that, this weekend is pretty good", he said.

I think Marcus is another versatile player that brings an element of toughness to our team that we're very excited about. Offseason for us guys is precious time, precious moments, so for them to show up was really cool for me.

Pagenaud had a track-record lap of 58.9124 seconds at an average speed of 109.138 miles per hour on the 1.786-mile street course for his first pole of the season and 10th overall.

"The last shootout in Q2 is always exciting", said Hinchcliffe, who's coming off a career best third-place finish here previous year. I didn't realize that he was ahead of us at the time, so I thought we were out, but luckily we got in, and Q2, we earned that one, a one-lap shootout to just kind of lay it all on the line there and put together our best lap of the weekend. When asked, the name that came up most often as the racer they'd least want trying to get past them late in a race is No. 26 Andretti Autosport Honda driver Takuma Sato, who sometimes tries moves that others might not attempt.

Oakville, Ontario native James Hinchcliffe, meanwhile, told Indycar.com that he just enjoys running the Honda Indy Toronto, regardless of the track's layout: "It should be pretty similar to a year ago".

"The last shootout in Q2 is always exciting", said Hinchcliffe, the victor this year at Long Beach.

James Hinchcliffe, driver of the No. 5 Arrow Schmidt Peterson Motorsports Honda, went in another direction.

"The support I feel from this city grows every single year, it's just incredible", he said.

Marco Andretti was fourth, followed by pole-sitter Pagenaud, Ryan Hunter-Reay, Max Chilton, Castroneves, Rahal and series leader Dixon.

Castroneves, who started third, jumped pole sitter Pagenaud and Graham Rahal for the lead with an inside pass in Turn 1 on the first lap. The day started out sunny and humid but clouded over during the event and it rained lightly at a few different times during the race.
