Carolina Panthers Fire GM Dave Gettleman, For Some Reason

Gettleman is the second general manager to be fired this summer, which is unusual. In January, Chris Ballard took over for Ryan Grigson with the Indianapolis Colts.

Nearly a year and a half since their trip to the Super Bowl, the Carolina Panthers have relieved general manager Dave Gettleman of his duties. "I want to thank Dave for the role he played in our success over the past four seasons".

The surprise move comes nine days before the Panthers open training camp on July 26 at Wofford College in Spartanburg, S.C.

In four years as Panthers general manager, Gettleman reached the playoffs three times, including a trip to the Super Bowl in 2015.

Carolina hasn't announced a replacement for Gettleman, and after a 6-10 campaign in 2016, it enters the 2017 season with more questions than answers.

His mindset has apparently changed, although the Panthers might not need the veteran running back after selecting Christian McCaffrey with the No. 8 pick in the 2017 National Football League draft. Still, this is an organization that has never put together back-to-back winning seasons since its inception in 1995.

Gettleman was a no-nonsense leader and some of his moves were unpopular, including parting with wide receiver Steve Smith, one of the most popular players in franchise history, in 2014.

His free agent work in Carolina was poor, and there were rumors swirling this offseason that team captain Greg Olsen would hold out for a new contract. He would sign with the Redskins. They also drafted running back Christian McCaffrey (Stanford) with the eight pick in the draft.
