An Army veteran's dying wish is to hear from you

Ailing Army veteran Lee Hernandez has one dying wish, and he literally wants you to be a part of it.

Voice or text, it doesn't matter which - he just wants to know that people care.

Lee Hernandez, 47, has undergone three brain surgeries but his body is still deteriorating and he continues to suffer from frequent strokes, according to AZ Central.

Eventually word spread to other organizations, including Arizona Veterans Forum, which posted a call request on its Facebook page.

"It broke my heart", Ernestine told AZCentral.

When no one did for two hours, he said "I guess no one wants to talk to me". Doctors have been unable to diagnose his illness, and have said all they can do is make him comfortable.

He served in the army for 18 and a half years, according to KRON, including a tour in Iraq. This wish comes after Lee told his wife, Ernestine Hernandez, one day to hold his phone just in case someone chose to call him. Ernestine thanks every single person who has taken a moment to contact Lee, saying that the phone hasn't stopped ringing.

Ernestine reached out to Caregivers of Wounded Warriors to share his request. Therefore, as his last wish, he wanted people - strangers - to give him a call or to send him a text. Nevertheless, Ernestine said her husband is a "fighter" and has "beaten the odds and his strong will keeps him going". "It really uplifts him", said Ernestine, who reads the text messages and cards to her husband because he is almost blind. The Hernandez family can be reached at 210-632-6778. "I am trying to give him the best life I am able to with the help of my mom".

Though he is in a lot of pain most days, Lee tries to answer the phone each time it rings.

Lee's disease started about five years ago.
