Washington Mulling Travel Ban on All Americans To North Korea

Kanter said there is no way to tell for certain how Warmbier sustained his injuries.

The 22-year-old had spent more than a year in North Korean detention after being arrested for stealing a political poster from a hotel. He was visiting North Korea with a tour group.

The North's KCNA news agency said in a one-sentence dispatch that Warmbier's release followed a court decision on Tuesday.

Fred Warmbier explained that he was relieved Otto was "now home in the arms of those who love him" but he also felt "anger that he was so brutally treated for so long", Warmbier said during a press conference at Wyoming High School in OH where Otto had graduated. After the trial, North Korea alleged Otto Warmbier came down with botulism, which meant his captors had to give him a sleeping pill, and he never woke up. The medical team who has been treating Warmbier said they've agreed with his family to hold back any details about his prognosis.

Though the medical staff caring for Warmbier "have no verifiable information about what happened to Otto", they say Warmbier's type of injury usually comes from cardio-pulmonary arrest, or a stoppage of the heart and lungs "resulting in the death of brain tissue". There are now three United States aircraft carriers within striking range of North Korea, meaning that the United States is essentially prepared for serious military conflict with North Korea. Pyongyang has vowed to develop a nuclear-tipped intercontinental ballistic missile capable of hitting the USA mainland.

On Thursday, North Korea said that it had released Mr Warmbier "on humanitarian grounds".

"Whether there's a connection there or not, I don't know", Bolton said.

Instead, he said, Otto's release stemmed from the work of USA diplomats in the State Department.

Fred Warmbier said there's relief to have their son home in the arms of those who love him and anger that he was so brutally treated for so long. Blue-and-white ribbons were tied around trees and utility poles along the main road.

"Otto has been terrorized and brutalized for 18 months by a pariah regime in North Korea", the father said in an interview with Tucker Carlson of Fox News, scheduled to air Thursday night. They'd had no word from Otto since March 2016. "There's no excuse for the way North Koreans treated our son".

A White House spokeswoman says Warmbier's release "was a big priority" for President Donald Trump.

Fred Warmbier also offered some criticism of the Obama administration. He said they made multiple trips from their suburban Cincinatti home to Washington over the time of Otto's captivity.

Warmbier is from Cincinnati, but was attending the University of Virginia when he was detained in North Korea in January of 2016.

The Democrat and former US ambassador to the United Nations credits the Department of State for working to get the student back home.

Doctors declined to speculate on what may have caused Warmbier's condition and said they would not discuss his prospects or treatment out of respect for his family.

With the emplacement of the THAAD anti-missile system in South Korea and increased pressure from the Chinese (at the behest of President Trump), North Korea is feeling the pressure.
