US Market Indexes Regain Losses for the Week

Banking and petroleum stocks pulled back on Tuesday (May 30), pushing equities lower, as USA data pointed to modest inflation and ebbing consumer confidence.

Payroll processor ADP said private businesses added 253,000 jobs last month, more than economists expected and an acceleration from April.

USA stocks are set for a lower open as the truncated trading week begins, a key jobs report comes into focus, and after the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite Index reached new highs on Friday.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 50.81 points (0.24 per cent) to close the day at 21,029.47. The Nasdaq Composite Index was down 4.67 points, or 0.08 per cent, to 6,198.52.

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 Index closed at 1,396.06 for a gain of 25.85 points or 1.89%.

"The best word to describe investors right now is numb".

U.S. Treasury prices barely moved following April personal income and spending data, with the benchmark 10-year yield down a basis point at 2.23%.

On Thursday, the price of crude oil rose 0.1% to $48.36 a barrel after data released by the Energy Information Administration showed USA crude-oil inventories fell more than expected for the most recent week.

West Texas Intermediate Crude Oil was steady after yesterday's falls, trading about $48.33 in early trade.

MARKETS OVERSEAS: France's CAC-40 gained 0.6 percent, Germany's DAX advanced 0.3 percent and London's FTSE 100 added 0.2 percent.

FIVE STARS: Dollar General rose $2.58, or 3.5 percent, to $75.97 after it reported stronger earnings for the latest quarter than analysts expected. JPMorgan (JPM.N) fell 1.7 percent and Bank of America (BAC.N) lost 1.4 percent as the two biggest drags on the S&P 500. USA allies around the world sounded alarms about the likely consequences of an American withdrawal.
