Trump tweets his approval rating is higher than Obama's

The report also indicates that 31 percent of responders strongly approve of the way Trump is performing and 42 percent who strongly disapprove. Republicans in Texas are still satisfied, with 66 percent saying Trump is honest and trustworthy and 80 percent saying he's competent.

The Associated Press-NORC poll, published on Thursday, finds the president's popularity at the lowest recorded during his presidency, with just 35 percent approving of his performance. He said Democrats are not fans of the state's junior senator - "he's got to write off 33 percent of the electorate" - but said Cruz's strength with Republicans gives him a solid foundation. Among the Republicans who have an unfavorable view of Russian Federation, 20 percent have a very unfavorable view, compared to 53 percent of Democrats whose views are very unfavorable - a remarkable reversal of the attitudes toward Russian Federation expressed in American politics in the post-World War II era. Last week a Quinnipiac University poll found 32 percent of GOP respondents thought the president was not level-headed, while 21 percent said he did not share their values.

"Republicans like Cruz more than we like dads on Father's Day", said Daron Shaw, co-director of the poll and a government professor at UT-Austin. This no doubt informs many Democrats' astonishment that Trump supporters don't see him as they do. Denmon referenced recent news reports that Trump was considering firing Robert Mueller, the special counsel named by the Justice Department to investigate Russia's role in the 2016 election. His numbers on climate change (64 percent disapprove), foreign policy (63 percent disapprove), immigration (60 percent disapprove) and the economy (55 percent disapprove) underscore that Republicans risk their own political future if they rubber-stamp Trump's policy choices. Once again, the answers were colored by party affiliation: 74 percent of Democratic voters said yes, while 80 percent of Republican voters said no. The speaker, as is ordinarily the case, remains the least well-known of the three, with 46 percent of voters either giving him neutral or no ratings. But Cruz is also the leader in negative reviews, getting those from 44 percent of voters.

Russia's attempts to influence that election are the subject of an investigation.

While 51 percent of Democrats hold a favorable opinion of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, 43 percent of Republicans share that view. That comes two months after House Republicans passed a measure to repeal and replace parts of the Affordable Care Act. The lesser-known El Pasoan is viewed favorably by 18 percent of Texas voters, unfavorably by 15 percent. Another 30 percent registered no opinion. The survey's margin of error is 4.1 percentage points.
