Trump supporters turn on special counsel Mueller

Ahead of the hearing there had been suggestions that Sessions might have had a third, unreported, encounter with Kislyak in April 2016, at Washington's Mayflower Hotel, where candidate Trump was giving his first major foreign policy speech. "If there were not good cause, it wouldn't matter to me what anybody says".

Sessions adds that he has no knowledge of "any such conversations by anyone connected to the Trump campaign".

Lawmakers for weeks have demanded answers from Sessions, particularly about meetings he had last summer and fall with the Russian ambassador to the United States, Sergey Kislyak.

Both Rosenstein and Sessions are testifying Tuesday on Capitol Hill.

Burr says the committee staff met with Johnson on Monday. Trump called because "I have been very clear" about Mueller and the lawyers he's hired amounting to a "rigged game", Gingrich said.

In appointing Mueller last month, Rosenstein said that the "public interest requires me to place this investigation under the authority of a person who exercises a degree of independence from the normal chain of command".

"The President did talk with him in the days before he was named special counsel", Ruddy told PBS on Monday in the same interview where he said Trump was "considering terminating" Mueller as special counsel.

"I'm not going to follow any orders unless I believe those are lawful and appropriate orders", Rosenstein responded.

"It's a mistake to pretend that this is going to be some neutral investigation", he said.

Rosenstein: No, senator, it is not a disqualification.

Under questioning from South Carolina Sen.

If Mr Trump instructs Mr Rosenstein to dump Mr Mueller, it would evoke memories of 1973, when two top Justice Department officials, Mr Elliott Richardson and Mr Bill Ruckelshaus, resigned rather than obey then President Richard Nixon's order to fire Mr Archibald Cox, the special prosecutor conducting the Watergate investigation. "I think he's weighing that option". Still, Gingrich said any special counsel with an agenda can "all of the sudden find something procedural and technical to latch onto".

He told senators during a committee hearing that there would have to be "good cause" for Mueller to be removed from his role. "If there were not good cause it wouldn't matter what anyone said".

"I'd be surprised if he did that", Ryan said.

Sessions maintained that he had not been briefed on the Russian Federation investigation between the time of his February swearing-in and his March 2 recusal.

"Mueller can be fired only for good cause, and I'm required to put that cause in writing".

Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., raised questions regarding Mueller's independence, however. Trump ally Newt Gingrich has been calling for Mueller's removal, tweeting on Monday that "Republicans are delusional if they think the special counsel is going to be fair". She asked whether he has seen "any evidence of good cause" to fire Mueller.

Rosenstein replied "We're not briefing the Oval Office, so I don't know how they would get there".

What's more, because the special counsel exists as a result of executive-branch regulations - as opposed to federal law - Trump could also repeal those regulations and effectively strip Mueller of his authority to act.

Those calls have escalated since fired FBI Director Comey cryptically told lawmakers last week that the bureau had expected Sessions to recuse himself weeks before he did from the investigation into contacts between Trump campaign associates and Russian Federation during the 2016 presidential election.

Trump could alternatively direct the Justice Department to repeal the regulation, potentially allowing the president to directly fire a special counsel.

"The best advice would be to let Robert Mueller do his job.", he said.

As certain media friends and allies have floated the trial balloon of President Donald Trump firing special counsel Robert Mueller, a host of pundits and pols have come down strongly against it.
