Trump Offers 'Warm Support' to Theresa May After Poll Setback

"I would have thought that's enough to go", said main opposition Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn.

Former Treasury chief George Osborne - who was sacked by May past year - called her a "dead woman walking", and opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn said he was ready to contest another election at any time. He tweeted that an article in the Mail on Sunday newspaper headlined "Boris set to launch bid to be PM as May clings on" was "tripe".

"But you've got to convince them of your credibility and that you can move from protesting about the government to being in government".

"The mandate she has got is lost Conservative seats, lost votes, lost support and lost confidence", he said.

After being re-elected with an increased majority in her own seat, May said Britain "needs a period of stability" as it prepares for the complicated process of withdrawing from the European Union.

After confirming yesterday that her top five ministers would keep their jobs, including finance minister Philip Hammond, May is expected to continue to appoint the government that will take on one of the most demanding negotiations in British history.

The Conservatives held 330 seats in the last Parliament, compared with 220 for Labour, 54 for the Scottish National Party and nine for the Liberal Democrats.

"I can still be Prime Minister".

May announced the party would try to work with Northern Ireland's Democratic Unionist Party, an alliance that is fraught with difficulties.

DUP Leader Arlene Foster recently denied the party was homophobic.

Anand Menon, professor of politics at King's College London, said her lack of a parliamentary majority made it far more likely that Britain would leave the European Union without a deal. In fact, Nick Clegg, deputy prime minister in the coalition government with David Cameron, the last prime minister to hold a vote he didn't have to that ended disastrously, lost his seat.

The arrangement with the DUP will make governing easier, but it makes some Conservatives uneasy.

There was no mention of what concessions the DUP may have asked for, amid growing concern about the influence of a party opposed to abortion and gay marriage, and which has proved hugely controversial in the past over the homophobic and sectarian views of some of its representatives.

The government does not have long to ink a deal.

May said Brexit talks would begin on June 19 as scheduled, the same day as the formal reopening of parliament. The speech will be followed by several days of debate and a vote.

"We will - obviously - amend the Queen's Speech".

Ed Balls, a former Labour Treasury chief, said it would hurt May's negotiating position with Europe.

"It's an issue very close to my heart and one that I wanted categoric assurances from the prime minister on, and I received (them)", said Davidson, who is engaged to be married to her female partner.

Jean-Claude Juncker, President of the European Commission, said he hoped there would be no further delays, and that the result of the United Kingdom general election would not have a "major impact on the negotiations we are desperately waiting for".

And getting the deal through the House of Commons is just the first step.
