Trump offers assistance to United Kingdom after London Finsbury Park terror attack

A terror attack in London left one man dead and several others injured after a van drove into pedestrians outside Finsbury Park Mosque after the end of evening prayers.

Police say they are treating the incident as a terror attack, and add the suspect has been detained on suspicion of attempted murder.

The BBC reports it understands the man in 47-year-old Darren Osborne from Cardiff.

Sunderland City Council leader Paul Watson, said: "Our thoughts and prayers go out to all those caught up in the attack near Finsbury Park mosque".

Metropolitan Police Commissioner Cressida Dick said it was "quite clearly an attack on Muslims". "Eight people injured were taken to three separate hospitals; two people were treated at the scene for minor injuries". "We don't want to give in to these kinds of messages, we have to confront them".

The apparent attack, which London Mayor Sadiq Khan called a "horrific" act of terrorism, occurred at 12:20 a.m. local time (7:20 p.m. ET).

Osborne was taken into custody shortly after the attack when bystanders in the crowd restrained him until police arrived.

I'm very conscious of that: he bet on me for Juventus but left before I arrived; then he wanted me at Chelsea come what may. Chelsea and Manchester United have a long history of competing with each other for elite players in the transfer market.

Though Trump was quick to denounce those earlier attacks, on Monday morning-with the targets and victims Muslim and the alleged assailant a white male-the president found better things to do with his Twitter account.

After being seized, the man said he had wanted to kill "many Muslim people", one witness told journalists.

Vehicles have also been also used to attack the public on London's Westminster Bridge, in Nice, France, and in Berlin.

The mosque was shut down in 2003 after a police raid, but was reopened in 2005 under new trustees and new imams, which have reportedly turned it around.

The cardinal also wrote to Mohammad Kozbar, trustee of the Finsbury Park Mosque, saying, "I am horrified that people should, again, be targeted in this way". In the past decade, the mosque has transformed its image from one associated with radicalization to one that advocates interfaith harmony.

Photos show a number of police cars are on the scene and the area cordoned off to civilians. Britain's terrorist alert has been set at "severe" meaning an attack is highly likely.

Prime Minister Theresa May condemned the "sickening" incident, reaffirming Britain's determination to fight "terrorism, extremism and hatred".
