Trump lawyer says Trump not under investigation, despite Trump's tweet

However in an interview with Chris Wallace on "Fox News Sunday" Sekulow admitted that he doesn't actually know for certain if Trump is under investigation or not because he can't read the mind of special counsel Robert Mueller.

Mr Trump, he said, was merely responding to an anonymously sourced Washington Post report that said special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into links between Trump aides and Russian Federation had expanded to look at Mr Trump's firing of FBI director James Comey.

While Mr Trump's tweets following the report appeared to confirm the investigation, Mr Sekulow lawyer said it only appeared that way because of the character limit on Twitter.

"The president can not be investigated, or certainly can not be found liable for engaging in an activity he clearly has power to do under the Constitution", Sekulow said, referencing the firing of former FBI Director James Comey.

The rising criticism puts a new focus on the relationships between the president, special counsel and the Justice Department, especially as questions loom over whether Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein will recuse himself from overseeing Mueller's probe.

Jay Sekulow, a member of President Donald Trump's legal team, has had quite the morning today.

The president suggested on Twitter that he may have taped conversations. Todd said. "If this investigation is going to find - and he knows he did nothing wrong, then he shouldn't be afraid of this investigation". Sekulow added that Trump is "very effective" with his use of social media.

When Wallace pointed out that he'd used the word "investigated", Sekulow said that he was responding to a hypothetical situation that would occur if the president were being investigated, which he definitely is not.

Democratic Rep. Ted Lieu said late Friday that if Trump does, in fact, fire Mueller and Rosenstein, Congress will quickly come together to begin impeachment proceedings. "The tape will speak for itself; you said he is being investigated".

A Justice official said Rosenstein was motivated in part because of frustration that recent news stories have unfairly brought on a torrent of "leak" accusations against the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Mueller's team.

"The President is not a subject or target of an investigation".

On Sunday, the Russian Foreign Ministry criticized President Donald Trump's decision to freeze a detente with Cuba and his verbal attack on the Caribbean island's leaders.

Sekulow also said he "can't imagine a scenario where the president would not be aware of it".

Trump adviser Newt Gingrich said on ABC's "This Week" that the tweet Friday "didn't help him".

The transition official said the organization has also separately asked the General Services Administration to preserve records from the Trump transition that were transferred to its facilities after the inauguration.

Comey made the existence of this investigation public in a March hearing before the House intelligence committee.

"I'd say we're 20 percent into it, just to throw a number at it", King said on NBC's "Meet the Press".

Taking to Twitter on Sunday while spending the weekend at the Camp David presidential retreat, Trump again referenced the "distraction of the Witch Hunt".

"If the president thinks he can fire Deputy Attorney General Rosenstein and replace him with someone who will shut down the investigation, he's in for a rude awakening", Senator Dianne Feinstein of California, the top Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, said Friday in a statement.
