Texas sailor among the dead in destroyer-container ship collision

The ship was listing as it sailed into its homeport in Yokosuka, Japan on Saturday. Most of the 300 crew members on board would have been asleep at the time, The Associated Press reported. The cause of the collision at night and in clear weather is not known.

A track of the much-larger container ship's route by MarineTraffic, a vessel-tracking service, shows it made a sudden turn as if trying to avoid something at about 1:30 a.m., before continuing eastward.

Shipping data in Thomson Reuters Eikon shows the merchant ship chartered by Japan's Nippon Yusen KK 9101.T , made a complete U-turn between 12:58 a.m. and 2:46 a.m. on June 17.

The investigators will be questioning the crew of the USS Fitzgerald, the Aegis guided missile destroyer that collided with the ACX Crystal, a Philippine-flagged container ship, just off the Izu peninsula.

But after interviewing the ACX Crystal's crew, the Japanese coast guard revised its crash time estimate to 1:30 a.m.

The Japan Coast Guard has already spoken to the Filipino crew and is also probing the inconsistency.

Nanami Meguro, a spokeswoman for NYK Line, the ship's operator, agreed with the earlier timing.

Right after the collision, the USS Fitzgerald lost all of its communications because its communications room is one of the areas that became flooded, according to the Navy.

He declined to elaborate on why the ship took almost an hour to report the accident but said it could take ships time to notify authorities as they dealt with more urgent matters.

The headline shocked the close-knit world of the surface Navy: Seven sailors aboard the destroyer USS Fitzgerald were killed, and other crew members injured, when the warship collided with a cargo vessel off Japan.

7 dead, heavy damage to US Navy ship in collision
Earlier, the 7th Fleet said the US ship sustained damage on its starboard side and experienced flooding in some spaces. The accident, in which a 29,060-ton container ship slammed into a 8,315-ton destroyer, is under investigation.

The U.S. Navy on Monday identified the dead sailors as: Dakota Kyle Rigsby, 19, from Palmyra, Virginia; Shingo Alexander Douglass, 25, from San Diego, California; Ngoc T Truong Huynh, 25, from Oakville, Connecticut; Noe Hernandez, 26, from Weslaco, Texas; Carlos Victor Ganzon Sibayan, 23, from Chula Vista, California; Xavier Alec Martin, 24, from Halethorpe, Maryland; and Gary Leo Rehm Jr., 37, from Elyria, Ohio.

"I will not speculate on how long these investigations will last", said Vice Adm. Joseph Aucoin, commander of the Navy's 7th Fleet.

The sailors' remains are expected to arrive at Dover Air Force Base in DE on Tuesday. The 7th fleet later confirmed that the sailors were in stable condition and were being treated for lacerations and bruises at the Naval Hospital Yokosuka.

The Fitzgerald's captain, Cmdr. Bryce Benson, suffered a head injury in the collision. "In due time, the United States Navy will fully investigate the cause of this tragedy", he said.

Carmen said she reached out to other families after the collision.

Sykes says her son told her that four men in his berth, including those sleeping on bunks above and below him died, while three died in the berth above his.

"This has been a hard day", said Vice Adm. Joseph P. Aucoin, the commander of the 7th Fleet. Most of the damage is below the waterline, including a large gash near the keel, Aucoin said. "So the water flow was tremendous, and so there wasn't a lot of time in those spaces that were open to the sea".

While the ship will require "significant fix", it is "salvageable", Aucoin said, adding that he hopes the repairs take less than a year.

The container ship's left bow was dented and scraped, but it did not appear to have sustained any major structural damage.

The damage to the destroyer may suggest that the container ship slammed into it at a high speed, according to The AP. Under my authority, I am initiating a JAGMAN investigation into this collision, and I will appoint a flag officer to lead that investigation. Most congestion occurs in the early hours of the day, and fast currents make it a tricky area that requires experience and skill to navigate.
