Shot US congressman Scalise improving

WASHINGTON (AP) - Louisiana Rep. Steve Scalise was upgraded from "critical" to "serious condition" Saturday and continued to show signs of improvement after he was wounded in a shooting at a Republican baseball practice outside Washington.

Scalise is still in critical condition but is doing better, according to a statement from MedStar Washington Hospital Center where the congressman is now confined. Mr Scalise, 51, sustained injuries to internal organs, broken bones and severe bleeding after being shot in his left hip on Wednesday morning on a baseball field in a Washington suburb.

Sava said that, while Scalise remains in critical condition, his risk of death is substantially lower now than when he came in.

Medstar Washington Hospital Center released the update Saturday on behalf of the Scalise family.

The Metro trains on Washington's Green Line were filled shoulder-to-shoulder as people headed to National Stadium Thursday night in what turned out to be a record-breaking turnout at the Congressional Baseball Game.

President Donald Trump, who visited Scalise in the hospital on Wednesday, sent a video message that played at the start of the game.

The game was dedicated to Scalise and the other victims of the shooting. Capitol Police said they had "no evidence to suggest that the purchases were not lawful". Scalise, of Louisiana, underwent surgery Wednesday night to fix a broken hip and another procedure to stem heavy bleeding.

Three people were killed and over 1,000 evacuated in the Portuguese island of Madeira due to the fierce wildfires a year ago. Thirty bodies were found inside cars and nearly 20 more were found next to vehicles, Portuguese officials said.

Steve Scalise is "in some trouble", President Trump said Thursday, before adding he's hopeful the House Whip will make a full recovery. He received multiple units of blood, said Sava, who declined to describe the exact nature of Scalise's internal injuries.

Donations from the game will go toward Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Washington, The Washington Nationals Dream Foundation, The Washington Literacy Center and The Capitol Police Memorial Fund.

ESPN reported, "When the president intoned three words he said have brought Americans together for generations-"Let's play ball"-cheers rang out".

David Bailey, one of the two Capitol Police officers who was injured during the shooting, threw the first pitch. hs colleague Officer Krystal Griner was shot in the ankle, is recovering.

U.S. Rep. Mike Bost, a Murphysboro Republican whose 12th Congressional District covers the Belleville area, has said Hodgkinson contacted his offices a number of times, but none of the communication seemed threatening, according to Bost spokesman George O'Connor.

"The positive thoughts, prayers and words of encouragement from across the nation have meant the world to Matt and to all of us", Mika's family said in the statement.
