Seven Sailors Killed as US Navy Destroyer Collides with a Container Ship

ACX Crystal, the Philippine-flagged merchant vessel that was damaged after colliding with the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Fitzgerald, is seen at a port in Yokohama, Japan in this photo taken by Kyodo on June 19, 2017. "It was traumatic", Aucoin said.

"In due time, the United States Navy will fully investigate the cause of this tragedy, " Stackely said. The container ship might have failed to spot the destroyer and rammed into it, or the destroyer somehow might have made a sudden move to the right.

The coast guard initially said the collision occurred at 2:20 a.m. because the Philippine ship had reported it at 2:25 a.m. and said it just happened. Takeshi Aikawa of the Japan coast guard said that so far no significant damage or injuries were reported on the container ship.

Divers found the missing sailors after they were able to gain access to parts of the USS Fitzgerald that were damaged in the collision.

Security expert Steffan Watkins, an independent open-source intelligence analyst and contributor to Jane's Intelligence Review, believes the Crystal may have been sailing on auto-pilot and that none of the crew were on the bridge at the time of the collision.

The U.S. Navy on Monday identified the dead sailors as: Dakota Kyle Rigsby, 19, from Palmyra, Virginia; Shingo Alexander Douglass, 25, from San Diego, California; Ngoc T Truong Huynh, 25, from Oakville, Connecticut; Noe Hernandez, 26, from Weslaco, Texas; Carlos Victor Ganzon Sibayan, 23, from Chula Vista, California; Xavier Alec Martin, 24, from Halethorpe, Maryland; and Gary Leo Rehm Jr., 37, from Elyria, Ohio. Much of the destruction came to two berthing compartments where 116 of the crew sleep, Aucoin said. Sputnik reported on Monday that the crew of the 29,000-ton ACX Crystal waited 50 minutes before alerting authorities of the crash, but USA officials have stuck with the original timeline, which states that the crash occurred at 2:20 a.m. local time, instead of 1:30 a.m.as Japanese officials said on Monday. During the collision, he was in his cabin, which was destroyed. All three patients are alert and under observation, according to a Department of Defense statement.

The Fitzgerald had compromised propulsions after suffering damage on it's side below the water line and a US defense official said there was flooding in three compartments.

"The crew had to fight very hard to keep the ship afloat", he said.

The path of the Fitzgerald before the collision is not clear because military ships do not transmit location data like commercial vessels.

The damage to the destroyer may suggest that the container ship slammed into it at a high speed, according to The AP. Aucoin wouldn't speculate on the cause of the collision and would order a thorough investigation.

"The Coast Guard will be taking the lead in the marine casualty investigation", said Lt. Scott Carr, spokesman for the American investigation team.

The Crystal sustained minor damage to its bow.

"We are struck by deep sorrow", Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe wrote in a message to President Donald Trump on Sunday. "I express my heartfelt solidarity to America at this hard time", praising USA servicemen in Japan under the allies' bilateral security pact.

Carmen said she reached out to other families after the collision.
