Scottish independence dealt a blow

Scottish independence dealt a blow

SNP leader Nicola Sturgeon has said Theresa May must be regretting her "arrogant" decision to call a snap General Election believing she would "cruise to a landslide victory".

The sizable losses appear to be a repudiation of the party's promise to push for Scots to go back to the polls for another vote for independence.

"That's what a lot of people in Scotland were reacting against, and I think they've spoken pretty loudly to Nicola Sturgeon tonight and she has to take it off the table".

Her comments mark the first time that a senior Conservative figure has suggested involving other political forces in Brexit talks and come in the wake of a disastrous election for the Conservatives, which is seeking support from Northern Ireland's Democratic Unionist Party to stay in power.

"I think we have seen the country's reaction in the number of SNP seats falling".

"She pledged to fight for women in particular carrying on her campaign against the two child tax credit cap and the rape clause".

"The SNP has emerged as the leading party in Scottish politics once again at Westminster, it's a significant feat for us to have achieved for the second election in succession, but there are clearly issues we have to address as a outcome". We have to wait and see how things shake out. "But I've always said - the SNP would want to be part of a progressive alternative to a Tory government".

Also on the back foot is Scottish National Party leader and leader of the devolved Scottish government, Nicola Sturgeon, who just a year ago seemed unassailable.

The SNP argued that Scots deserved a do-over of the 2014 independence referendum, which the "leave" campaign lost by around 5%.

Sturgeon said she would now seek an alliance with like-minded parties to try to keep the Conservatives out of government and to keep both Scotland and the United Kingdom within the single European market as part of the Brexit talks.

One guy decided he was going to do something about it, and he ran his van, he killed one person and injured a bunch of others. Mohammed Mahmoud told reporters: "By God's grace we managed to surround him and to protect him from any harm".

Here in Scotland, the SNP will concentrate on the "day job" and bide their time on independence.

It follows a bruising night for the SNP on Thursday as both the Conservatives and Labour outperformed expectations north of the border.

The Scottish Parliament gave the green light for a second independence referendum in March, but any vote would need to be ratified by Westminster, and Prime Minister Theresa May has already rejected this timetable.

In Edinburgh, Labour's Ian Murray should return in South, and the SNP will lose Edinburgh West, probably to the Liberal Democrats who have history there.

The party also lost two of their biggest names in Westminster - Depute Leader of the party Angus Robertson and former First Minister Alex Salmond.

"I can only put that down to how he felt in the run up to the election, what he was hearing on the doorsteps wasn't so pleasing to the ears".

Scottish Labour leader Kezia Dugdale said her new MPs will be firm opponents of a second independence referendum.

"Perhaps this is one area where Theresa May delivered", he said.

Asked to explain what she meant by "open Brexit", she said: "When I am talking about open Brexit, it is about making sure that we increase freedoms rather than increase barriers".
