Scalise upgraded to 'fair condition,' beginning rehabilitation

Scalise, the Republican House Majority Whip, was critically injured during a shooting by a lone gunman at the GOP baseball team's practice for a charity game June 14. On Wednesday, his condition was upgraded to fair a week after he was shot on a Virginia baseball field.

On the day of the incident, Hodgkinson shot at the players on the field with the semiautomatic rifle and the 9mm handgun and had bought the weapons from licensed gun dealers, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Before the first shots were reported just after 7 a.m., Hodgkinson raised the ominous prospect of a politically-motivated attack when he encountered Rep. Ron DeSantis, R-Fla., and others in the baseball field parking lot.

The FBI says Hodgkinson was carrying around a list of names, members of Congress. Officials aren't saying who those members were.

Slater said Hodgkinson legally purchased both the guns he used in the attack - the handgun in March 2003 and the rifle in November 2016, after the presidential election.

Donald Trump Jr. appears to contradict father's account of private Comey meeting
Trump Jr. said this suggests Comey could be behind further leaks of information that have plagued the administration. The Republican president took to twitter earlier in the day, claiming "total and complete vindication".

"On the shooter, we found a paper that contained the names of six members of Congress", Slater told reporters, though he did not characterize it as a hit list. Two days before the shooting, Hodgkinson messaged a family member seeking to return home, Slater said. "A second document with a rough sketch of several streets in Washington, D.C. was found on Hodgkinson, however, it was not deemed to be of investigative significance".

"He was known to have an anger management problem", Slater said at a news conference, adding later that Hodgkinson was on medication and "struggling" with a number of issues including a hard personal life. The new law will lower the burden of proof to fire employees, allowing for dismissal even if most evidence is in a worker's favor.

Hodgkinson, who had came to Virginia from Belleville, Illinois, and was living out of his van, had rented a storage locker in Virginia that he visited more than three dozen times between April and June. When he was told it was the Republican team he remained in the area. None of the five people injured in last Wednesday's shooting, reports the Washington Post. During the shooting, U.S. Capitol Police and other officers returned fire.

In Belleville, Hodgkinson also had a record of arrests on various criminal charges dating back to 1988, according to St. Clair County, Ill., Circuit Court documents.

Hodgkinson left his home in Belleville, Ill., in March and drove to the Alexandria area, where he then lived in his vehicle at a YMCA across the street from the baseball field.
