Sanders 'Delighted' by Corbyn's Success in UK Election

Theresa May will stay as on as the Prime Minister with support from the Democratic Unionist Party in defiance of critics both within and outside her own party, but it remains to be seen as she could continue to lead the party and the government in the long term.

The Labour MP, who has been a critic of leader Jeremy Corbyn, said he recognised the party ran an "effective campaign" but a Conservative prime minister now sits in No 10. Britain looks set for months of political chaos. Five years of a Conservative government: "I can't, I'm afraid, be a cheerleader for that outcome".

But Corbyn, who won his north London seat, said that Labour would work to build a Britain that "works for the many, not the few".

The election, which took place on Thursday (June 8), resulted in a hung parliament with the Conservatives failing to win a majority.

She had spent the campaign denouncing Mr Corbyn as the weak leader of a spendthrift party that would crash Britain's economy and flounder in Brexit talks, while she would provide "strong and stable leadership" to clinch a good deal for Britain. The early election was meant to strengthen the British Conservative Party's hand in the lead-up to Brexit negotiations, but it has backfired spectacularly.

With 649 of 650 seats declared, the Conservatives had won 318 seats, short of the 326 needed for a parliamentary majority. Labour surpassed expectations by winning 262. "But he still doesn't have that many seats". "We are ready to do everything we can to put our program into operation", he said.

The two sides are looking to form a "confidence and supply" arrangement.

The DUP party traditionally held a "euroscpetic" stance and backed the Brexit vote. However, Labour has fought to water down May's Brexit strategy which could make it easier to reach a compromise with either the Liberal Democrats, which has ruled out any coalition, or the pro-European SNP. The DUP is a socially conservative group that opposes abortion and same-sex marriage and had links to Protestant paramilitary groups during Ireland's sectarian "Troubles". The speech will be followed by several days of debate and a vote - and defeat would nearly certainly topple the government.

"We will - obviously - amend the Queen's Speech".

Mr Leslie said Labour MPs were "working in this together" but he would not commit to serving in a shadow cabinet.

"As I reflect on the result, I will reflect on what we need to do in the future to take the party forward", May said before adding "I obviously wanted a different result".
