Russian Federation says targeting ISIL leaving Syria's Raqqa

"The Russian Navy's Admiral Esen frigate and Krasnodar submarine performed a launch of four Kalibr cruise missiles from the eastern Mediterranean against the targets of the IS (Daesh) terrorist groups in the area of Palmyra", the Ministry statement reportedly said.

A Russian warship and submarine have fired four cruise missiles from the Mediterranean at Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) targets near the Syrian city of Palmyra, the defence ministry said yesterday.

Russian Federation has been conducting a bombing campaign since 2015 in support of President Bashar al-Assad and has a naval contingent deployed to the eastern Mediterranean to bolster its firepower.

"All targets have been destroyed", it said. The city has been subjected to intense airstrikes in recent days.

The SDF has denied reports that it allowed IS fighters to leave the city. "And so it will be in all situations when the [Islamic State] is spotted anywhere on the Syrian territory".

Last Friday, the US -backed SDF, which contains numerous elements linked to the terrorist PKK/PYD group, called on ISIL militants in Raqqa to surrender by the end of the current month. IS forces, however, recaptured Palmyra eight months later, before Syrian government troops drove them out again in March this year.

The US, Turkish and Israeli militaries "were informed in a timely manner of the missile launches through existing communication channels".

The defense ministry in Moscow said Russian aviation bombed ISIL convoys leaving their de-facto capital to the south in the direction of the ancient city of Palmyra on May 25 and overnight from May 29 to May 30.

Russia's latest precision strikes have proven its naval forces' combat readiness and ability to carry out effective strikes using high-precision armament complexes at short notice.

Earlier this month Russian Federation agreed with Iran, another Assad ally, and Turkey, a key backer of the opposition, to establish "de-escalation" zones in western Syria in an attempt to shore up a cessation of hostilities between the government and rebels.
