Ronaldo & Portugal Frustrated By Mexico

A last gasp header by Hector Moreno helped Mexico secure a vital point against European Champions Portugal in the second match of Group A at the ongoing 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup in Russian Federation. Mexico are a virtual lock to qualify for the World Cup next year, and will have a puncher's chance against the best nations in the world.

The highly entertaining fixture saw Cristiano Ronaldo put through a sublime assist for Ricardo Quaresma who slotted home the opening goal in the 35th minute.

Ronaldo has 11 goals in five games with the national team this season, including two in Portugal's 3-0 win at Latvia in European World Cup qualifying last week, the team's last match before the Confederations Cup.

The teams went into halftime tied 1-1.

Portugal's William Carvalho, left, and Mexico's Raul Jimenez fight for the ball during the Confederations Cup, Group A soccer match between Portugal and Mexico, at the Kazan Arena, Russia, Sunday, June 18, 2017. "I arrived at a good point in time, when the team had just won the (European) title".

"We are calm and we have to think about the next game".

Mexican fans were in fine voice in the Kazan Arena and Osorio was delighted with the welcome his players received.

Coach Fernando Santos and some of Ronaldo's teammates are confident the star forward won't be affected by the buzz created by a report that said he wants to leave the Spanish club because of allegations that he defrauded the country's tax authorities.

A moment of controversy came when Pepe's goal was ruled out in the 21st minute after there were appeals Nani was offside.

Portugal is hoping a red-hot Cristiano Ronaldo can continue his sparkling form and help the European champions show that their victory at Euro 2016 wasn't a fluke. With this draw, Portugal and Mexico are in second and third place, respectively, in Group A with one point each.

Ronaldo made a great run from near midfield to set up Quaresma's 34th-minute goal.

The Portugal captain could not control the ball to shoot but his brilliant pass between three defenders left Quaresma free to round keeper Guillermo Ochoa and tap into the empty net. Mexico midfielder Carlos Vela got to the ball near the far post and sent it to the middle of the area for Chicharito's goal. Now we need to think of the next game, which we have to win.

"Ronaldo is motivated", young Portugal forward Andre Silva said.
