Proposed DUP deal would not undermine Good Friday Agreement, insists May

Mr Varadkar said he was reassured by the Prime Minister's commitment to make public the terms of any agreement.

"We spoke about the very important need for both governments to be impartial actors when it comes to Northern Ireland and that we are co-guarantors of the Good Friday Agreement and that any agreement that may exist between the Conservatives and the DUP should not in any way impact on the Good Friday Agreement", he said.

Varadkar also said the two prime ministers had discussed Brexit "in some detail".

"We want to get back to an executive that has all the parties around the table to collectively take decisions".

Irish Minister Simon Coveney is taking part in the talks for the first time.

"They can't have it both ways, it has to be dealt with sensibly", she said.

The parties have until 29 June to reach agreement and have been warned that direct rule could follow if they can't.

Addressing the Communist Party of Britain's executive committee, he declared that the DUP priority would be to gain more public money and reduce corporation tax on business profits to serve its own narrow interests in northern Ireland.

Sinn Féin's Northern Ireland leader Michelle O'Neill said that on Brexit the Sinn Féin call for special designated status for Northern Ireland within the European Union was "building up traction" across Europe.

"I will be making that case tomorrow for example despite the fact that it should really be a First Minister and a Deputy First Minister there to meet Michel Barnier or others to make the case for Northern Ireland".

THE DUP are living in a "fool's paradise" if they believe there can be a return to the power-sharing institutions without committing to a rights-based approach to government, Sinn Féin's Declan Kearney told the annual Wolfe Tone Commemoration in Bodenstown on Sunday.

Theresa May has still not secured a deal with the Democratic Unionist Party to allow her Government programme to survive a Commons vote, a day before the Prime Minister sets out her legislative measures in the Queen's Speech.

He added: "We see no reason why devolution and the executive can't be up and running now".

Sinn Fein's Stormont leader Michelle O'Neill also sat down with the Taoiseach yesterday, a series of meetings partymembers Gerry Adams, Mary Lou McDonald and Michelle Gildernew also attended.

"Clearly the DUP are on the wrong side of the argument in cosying up alongside the Tory government who are disrespecting the mandate of the people here".
