President Trump to bring back harsher restrictions on travel to Cuba

"The president vowed to reverse the Obama administration policies towards Cuba that have enriched the Cuban military regime and increased the repression on the island - it is a promise that President Trump made and it is a promise that President Trump is keeping", one senior administration official said during the briefing.

The new Trump policy will also prohibit most commercial transactions that allow money to flow to the Cuban military.

Hoping to bring democracy back to the Communist island, then-President Barack Obama in 2014 restored diplomatic ties with Cuba, reversing decades-old policy.

Despite a new direction, embassies that reopened in Washington, D.C. and Havana under Obama will remain open, and Cuban Americans will still be able to travel to Cuba and send money there, The Herald reports. Former President Obama re-established diplomatic ties, ended the "wet foot, dry foot" policy that gave Cuban illegal immigrants a path to citizenship, made it easier to do business on the island, and loosened travel restrictions.

The new policy would eliminate one of 12 different categories of travel Obama allowed-individual, so-called "people-to-people" travel.

Detailing a new National Security Presidential Memorandum, Trump is also expected to announce stricter enforcement of rules under which Americans can travel to Cuba.

The pro-business leaders said travel and trade with Cuba boosts American businesses and spread free market ideals to the island.

President Trump is basically following Cuban dissidents' lead, including those who supported Obama's opening to their country.

South Korea's Defense Ministry said the bombers engaged in routine exercises with its fighter jets aimed at deterring the North. China strictly implements United Nations Security Council resolutions and isn't the crux of the North Korean issue, he said.

But it does signal a tougher stance that could slow the number of Americans who have begun to flood into Cuba for Havana city breaks or on weeks-long beach holidays.

Cafe Versailles, in the heart of Miami's "little Havana", may not be the heartbeat for the Cuban-American movement in the U.S. But it is arguably its soul. And Americans can still self-certify under a general license that they are traveling to Cuba for legitimate reasons. At home, Trump's critics have questioned why his administration is now singling out Cuba for its human rights record while insisting that in other parts of the world it will not lecture other countries on the issue.

While some hotels will be encompassed by those restrictions, there will be exemptions - among them lodging options such as Airbnb, according to senior White House officials.

While the policy goes into effect when the president announces it on Friday, officials said that nothing will be implemented until new regulations are in place.

The measures will officially be announced tomorrow and take 30 days to initiate the regulatory process.

These types of trips focused on connecting US travelers with Cubans in their communities and homes, creating an educational environment where travelers can experience what everyday life is like for Cubans.
