Police identify Finsbury Park mosque suspect as 47yo Darren Osborne

Witnesses have described hearing the van driver, who was detained by members of the public at the scene, saying he had wanted to kill Muslims. British Security Minister Ben Wallace said authorities were aware of rising far-right activity but the suspect was not known to them prior to the attack.

Three Islamic extremists ram a van into pedestrians on London Bridge, then stab people at bars and restaurants in Borough Market before being shot to death by police.

"Extra police resources have already been deployed to reassure communities, and police will continue to assess the security needs of mosques and provide any additional resources needed", she said.

The attack comes during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, when people attend prayers at night.

A van plowed into Muslim worshippers leaving evening prayers at a London mosque early Monday, just one of a string of attacks in Britain in recent weeks and years.

"It appears from eyewitness accounts that the perpetrator was motivated by Islamophobia", he said.

He was arrested on suspicion of "the commission, preparation or instigation of terrorism including murder and attempted murder", the police said.

Prime Minister Theresa May said the attack was "every bit as sickening" as the others.

Frank reports that Muna Mohamed said one of her relatives suffered a broken back in Monday's attack and is in critical condition. Police said a suspect was quickly and calmly turned over to the police, and that no one else was found in the van.

Police said the arrested man would be the "subject of a mental health assessment in due course". Eight of the injured were taken to hospitals and the rest were treated at the scene.

The attack occurred outside the Muslim Welfare House, a small mosque with about 200 congregants.

They said there were a number of casualties and one person had been arrested.

May said: "Hatred and evil of this kind will never succeed".

Transportation officials said roads were being closed in the area.

Police faced criticism that they did not publicly declare the Finsbury Park attack as terrorism until well into Monday morning. "So we pushed people away from him until he was safely taken by police into custody and put into the back of the van". He was also killed by police.

Manchester was hit by a deadly attack on May 22 when a suicide bomber killed 22 people at an Ariana Grande concert.
