Phoenix heat wave generates record energy demand

Phoenix heat wave generates record energy demand

A heatwave in the United States has forced the cancellations of dozens of flights as soaring temperatures bring the worst heat the southwest has experienced in years.

American Airlines pilot Shane Coffey said extreme heat creates changes in the air density that make it harder for airplanes to take off, meaning pilots have to use more thrust or impose weight restrictions such as flying with less cargo.

With this is mind as a benchmark, consider the excessive heat warnings for the southwestern part of the country today, where forecasts have temperatures rising above 120 degrees.

Las Vegas could also see peaks on Tuesday and Wednesday, perhaps even gambling with its highest temperature ever observed, which was 117 degrees Fahrenheit in 2013.

A high of 121 degrees was expected in Palm Springs Tuesday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service, while a regional heat wave was not expected to die down until Thursday.

DID YOU KNOW? The highest temperature ever recorded in Phoenix, AZ was 122F, on June 26, 1990. Phoenix's forecast for Tuesday included a high of 120 degrees. Airlines can use other strategies for limiting weight during hot weather, such as not fueling completely, then making a refueling stop.

Heat affects planes because hot air expands until it isn't dense enough for them to generate lift ― and without lift, we're all grounded.

In the south-west USA, the heat has already caused several problems. During the watch, people are encouraged to drink more water than usual and avoid alcohol, caffeine and sugar.

American spokesperson Ross Feinstein told the Washington Post that heat-related cancellations could be expected throughout the week.

An excessive heat warning is in effect as temperatures are expected to stay above 110 degrees into the weekend.

The Southwest will experience a risky heatwave this week with temperatures reaching over a 100 degrees. "We really aren't expecting any change to the operation with our mainline aircraft".

The main burn center in Phoenix has issued a warning to people to be careful around auto interiors and pavement and with their pets.

Burt said the city has hit 118 degrees 11 times, most recently last summer.

In Phoenix and Las Vegas, the overnight lows will be 90 degrees through the midweek without providing much relief.

Salvation Army volunteers Evangeline Ford, left, and Jackie Rifkin, right, restock a cooler with bottles of water at a hydration station for people as they try to keep hydrated and stay cool as temperatures climb to near-record highs, Monday, June 19, 2017, in Phoenix.
