Orlando begins process of moving Confederate statue

The City of Orlando began carefully disassembling the Confederate statute at Lake Eola Park this morning, as part of its relocation to the Confederate veterans section at Greenwood Cemetery.

"It was common, you know, when the masons and the masonic lodges, when they would put corner stones in buildings, and when they would do that, they would they would always put in a time capsule".

Dyer has previously said he doesn't believe the statue should be permanently removed.

This Tuesday, May 16, 2017 photo shows a Confederate statue constructed in 1911 displayed at a downtown park in Orlando, Fla. Workers lowered the statue onto wooden slabs on a truck for transportation to a storage area where it will stay for several weeks until it can be reinstalled in its new location, says city spokesperson Cassandra Lafser. Greenwood Cemetery hosts four different separate military sections: Confederate, Union, Spanish-American War and American Legion (Korea, Vietnam, World War I and World War II). In May, white nationalists marched in Charlottesville, Virginia, to protest the removal of a Robert E. Lee statue in the city's Lee Park. The box will be stored safely and opened sometime in the future, Lafser said.

Warmbier is from Cincinnati , but was attending the University of Virginia when he was detained in North Korea in January of 2016. The medical team who has been treating Warmbier said they've agreed with his family to hold back any details about his prognosis.

The city is also working with historians to install a plaque near the monument that gives historical context and serves as an educational tool.

Six other Confederate monuments stand in Central Florida.

The first of 37 Confederate veterans was buried in the section in 1901.

City officials in St. Augustine told local media that they're paying close attention to the national debate because they have two Confederate statues in a plaza near two civil rights statues. Officials eventually decided it would cost too much to move it.
