One officer killed as Taliban storm Afghan police compound

Sardar Wali Tabasim, spokesman for the provincial police chief in Paktia Province, said another eight police officers were wounded in the attack. Ashraf Ghani also thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the air corridor between the two countries and said that India is a big market for Afghan goods. The attack was condemned by the US government, which hastened President Trump's decision to redeploy thousands of American soldiers back into Afghanistan.

An Afghan soldier was killed and another wounded. That was one of the deadliest Taliban attacks on an Afghan army base to date.

It comes as Washington is expected to announce an increase in the U.S. military deployment in the country to bolster Afghan forces who are struggling to contain the Taliban's nationwide offensive.

Such incidents remain relatively rare amid the close cooperation between Afghan and foreign forces, but it is likely to draw increased scrutiny from the Pentagon as it plans to boost troop numbers in Afghanistan. The target was the IS affiliate.

On 11 June, the Taliban claimed a similar operation in the east of the country: an Afghan soldier opened fire on U.S. troops killing three soldiers and wounding a fourth in an operation against insurgents in the eastern province. There was no earlier indication of his intent. This Taliban faction has a significant presence in Paktia province, where today's suicide assault took place.

DUP leader Arlene Foster has today called for a " sensible Brexit and one that works for everybody". Sinn Fein's Stormont leader, Michelle O'Neill, said her party was up for striking a deal.

When the Taliban announced the start of their spring offensive they took particular aim "on foreign forces, their military and intelligence infrastructure and in eliminating their internal mercenary apparatus". Both Afghan and USA officials have said the incident is under investigation. Clearly anxious, Pakistani officials have denounced recent terror attacks in Afghanistan and have strongly denied backing the Haqqani Network.

"Currently major exports from India to Afghanistan are man-made filaments, articles of apparels and clothing accessories, pharmaceutical products, cereals, man-made staple fibers, tobacco products, dairy and poultry products, coffee/tea/meat and spices", said Shaida Abdali, the Ambassador of Islamic Republic of Afghanistan to India.

Earlier last week, three us soldiers were killed when an Afghan commando suddenly opened fire in the midst of an operation against the Islamic state. Over 20 civilians were wounded by shrapnel and flying glasses, he said, adding nine ANP officers were also wounded by the blast and gun firing.

U.S. troops in Afghanistan now number about 8,400, with another 5,000 from North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies, who mainly serve in a training and advisory capacity.
