Oklahoma wins NCAA golf title, beating Oregon 3-1-1

Oklahoma's Brad Dalke - paired against OR junior Sulman Raza - earned the match-winning point on the 17th hole with his two-foot bogey putt as the Sooners captured their second NCAA title and first since 1989.

Patrick Martin avoided overtime for top-seeded Vanderbilt when he made an 18-foot birdie putt from the fringe Tuesday for a 1-up victory over Harry Hall of UNLV, and Theo Humphrey sent the Commodores into the semifinals by holding on for a 1-up victory in the final match. OR beat Oklahoma State 3-2 in Tuesday's quarterfinals before knocking off Vanderbilt in the semifinals.

The Sooners play IL in the semifinals later Tuesday, with Vanderbilt playing Oregon.

"I can't put into words what this opportunity means for us", said Sooner head coach Ryan Hybl after the Sooners had secured one of the final two spots in the championship final.

Norman Xiong opened the afternoon match against Vanderbilt with a 3 & 2 victory for the Ducks. Wyndham Clark had the only win for OR, beating Rylee Reinertson 1 up.

Oklahoma, which trailed in all five of its quarterfinal matches before rallying to beat Baylor, had an easier time against IL. They really played a great back nine, and I wouldn't be too surprised to see them win it all.

"We didn't get the result we wanted, and that's disappointing", said Baylor coach Mike McGraw, who was coaching a team in match play for the fifth time in nine years. Dalke had held a 2-up lead with two holes to play, only to have Perrine win both to extend the match. The Bears won the first two points as Cooper Dossey was a 1-up victor in the opening pairing and Braden Bailey won 2 & 1 in the second.

The Penguins scored just 10 seconds into the period when Guentzel scored his second of the game off of a perfectly-placed rebound. He's only two points (19) from matching the rookie mark for points in a single playoff, now with 19 points in 21 games.

Harris and Papa fought out of an early hole to take down the nation's No. 1-ranked duo of Robert Loeb and Jan Zielinski of host school Georgia 6-4, 6-2, 1-0 (6) Monday in front of more than 400 fans at the Dan Magill Tennis Center.

The Sooners are making their second all-time appearance in the NCAA championships match play.

OR is trying to show that last year's NCAA Championship victory wasn't just a product of being the host. "I just played it a little bit outside the left edge with dying speed like last time - it felt great".

Junior Rylee Reinertson's 3&1 victory over Michael Feagles finalized Oklahoma's win over IL.

OU will face defending national champion OR in the title match on Wednesday afternoon.

Championship Match 4-8 p.m.
