Man rams police vehicle in Paris; attacker likely killed

A spokesman for the French interior ministry, Pierre-Henry Brandet, said the driver's auto exploded as he tried to ram a police vehicle.

The man, who was known to French security services, died in the incident, officials said. He added that "a number of weapons, explosives to blow up this car" were discovered at the scene. France's anti-terrorism prosecutor opened an investigation. That incident recalled two other attacks on soldiers providing security at prominent locations around Paris, one at the Louvre museum in February and one at Orly airport in March.

Earlier this month a man wielding a hammer attacked police officers on patrol outside Notre Dame cathedral, injuring one before being shot and seriously injured himself.

The auto hit the front of the police van as it was overtaking it and caught fire, a police spokeswoman told reporters.

A man who died after driving into a police vehicle on the Champs-Elysees in Paris was on a terror watchlist, according to sources close to the investigation.

Reports from Paris said a driver was taken into custody Monday after crashing into a police auto on the famed Champs-Elysees.

Bomb squads are combing the area and the nearest subway station is closed to the public.

BJP picks Dalit leader Ram Nath Kovind as presidential choice
However, there are signs that all the opposition parties might not share the same views when it comes to Kovind's nomination. India's Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi (pic) tweeted that Ram Nath Kovind would "make an exceptional president".

Gerard Collomb told reporters that the man's motives were not immediately clear.

Under this bill, the state of emergency would be extended from July 15, its current expiration date, until November 1.

Some 30 minutes later, the police tweeted that the incident was now under control.

Interior Ministry spokesman Pierre-Henry Brandet said the incident was apparently deliberate.

Police officers seal off the access to the Champs Elysees avenue in Paris, France, Monday, June 19, 2017.

France remains in a state of emergency and on high alert over possible terrorist attacks due to its military intervention in Syria, Iraq and the Sahel region.

Some magistrates and human rights groups have protested in recent weeks against the proposal that would enshrine in ordinary law measures now in place under the state of emergency.
