London tower fire: 58 people missing presumed dead, say police

The Grenfell Tower fire was a "preventable accident" caused by "years of neglect" by the local council and successive governments, Mayor of London Sadiq Khan said yesterday.

Relatives of those missing after a high-rise tower blaze in London are searching frantically for their loved ones, as the police commander in charge of the investigation says he hopes the death toll will not rise to three figures.

The fire at the 24-story public housing project broke out early Wednesday.

Residents furious over the handling of the Grenfell Tower disaster descended on the local town hall Friday in west London, shouting, "We want justice".

The highly flammable siding on London's burned-out Grenfell Tower should never have been there in the first place - because it's illegal on United Kingdom high-rises, a British pol revealed Sunday.

Mr Khan said the images of the 24-storey building being ravaged by fire "should be forever seared into our nation's collective memory".

Cundy added that it will take weeks or longer to recover and identify all the dead in the housing block that was devastated.

Queen Elizabeth II visited West London to meet with those who were affected by the fire, as did Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn. This year, however, it is hard to escape a very sombre national mood.

The queen and her husband, Prince Philip, stood silently on the steps of Buckingham Palace before the start of the Trooping the Color ceremony that each year marks the queen's official birthday, which is traditionally celebrated in June when the weather is warm.

At least 30 people have died in Wednesday's fire and dozens are missing.

He said they would be looking at whether anyone could be charged with manslaughter following a litany of failings that led to the disaster - in which at least at least 58 people are now feared to have been killed. British health authorities say that 19 patients are still being treated at four London hospitals.

Nisha Parti, a film producer who has been organising help for victims, said volunteers have been unable to access the money, and said "no one is telling us where it is".

"Wallowing in the wash of a general election that stripped our prime minister of her authority on the very eve of European Union negotiations, neither common sense nor the evidence suggest she can re-establish public confidence", Matthew Parris wrote.

Some said they had never seen a building fire advance so quickly. Bellerin, a defender, also plays for London club Arsenal. More than $3.8 million has been raised for the victims.

She also noted that an emergency fund of more than $6 million has begun to be "distributed on the ground so people can buy clothes, food and other essentials".

Some of the anger stems from reports that Grenfell Tower had no central sprinkler system and was built with flammable materials that residents told the government needed to be fixed.

Many are demanding answers for how the blaze spread so quickly.

"We've worked tirelessly to establish how many people we believe were in Grenfell Tower on the night and at this point in time we are unable to say that they are safe or well", he said.

"It is hard to escape a very sombre national mood", Elizabeth said in a message on her official birthday.

The Council says it will cooperate "in full" with the government's inquiry. If you would like to discuss another topic, look for a relevant article.

"When the truth comes out about this tragedy, we may find that there is blood on the hands of a number of organizations", Lammy said.
