London mosque attack suspect arrested on terror grounds

The suspect, who lived in Wales and was identified as Darren Osborne, was held by a crowd who had witnessed him drive a van into a group of Muslim faithful, Efe news reported.

A 47-year-old father of four has been named as the suspect of the attack outside a mosque in London.

London police say one suspect has been detained in an apparent early-morning attack on worshippers standing outside a mosque.

Police have been searching a residential address in Pentwyn, a suburb to the northeast of Cardiff, where Mr Osborne has been listed as living.

Ten people were injured, two of them seriously, and one died at the scene, when a van ploughed into worshippers close to the Muslim Welfare House in Finsbury on Monday. "What's happened here is terrible, but it's ironic just a few hours before they had been gathering with members of the Christian and Jewish community in support of the Jo Cox Foundation".

"We have been informed that a van has run over worshipers as they left #FinsburyPark Mosque", the Muslim Council of Britain said on Twitter.

"Our community is in shock", said Mohammed Kozbar, chairman of the Finsbury Park Mosque, urging people attending prayers to remain vigilant.

Khan told Sky News that Mahmoud's actions "calming things down" were "what I'd expect from a good faith leader, from a good Muslim leader".

Police said they had deployed extra officers "to reassure communities, especially those observing Ramadan".

But the headlines on Monday are on the fourth terror attack to hit the country this year, with condemnation streaming in from every corner, including from Prime Minister Theresa May.

The terror probe led investigators to the Welsh capital Cardiff, where they searched a property said by media to be the home of Darren Osborne.

"People feel unsafe because after the terrorist attacks of London, Manchester, the increase of Islamophobia and hate crimes", he added.

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan said: "While this appears to be an attack on a particular community, like the bad attacks in Manchester, Westminster and London Bridge it is also an assault on all our shared values of tolerance, freedom and respect".

It also follows a suicide bombing at a pop concert in Manchester last month which killed 22, while in March, a man drove a rented auto into pedestrians on Westminster Bridge in London and stabbed a policeman to death before being shot dead.

"I tackled him on the floor until the police came", he told the BBC.
