Koepka's trip around the world leads to major title at home

Koepka's trip around the world leads to major title at home

"It looks as though the weather conditions are going to be a lot more challenging today at Erin Hills", said Tom Kite, who shot an even-par 72 in howling winds in the final round at Pebble Beach to win the 1992 U.S. Open. This U.S. Open wasn't lost, it was won by a 27-year-old Florida native who had only won one other PGA tournament.

Koepka said that Ryder Cup experience helped him learn to deal with the pressure that has been known to thwart many a major hopeful on Sunday.

From now on, Koepka will be known as a U.S. Open champion after he ran away down the stretch on Sunday to win the 117th Open in record-tying fashion at Erin Hills Golf Course.

Once the dust settled on the first 32 holes, it was obvious that this was going to be no ordinary U.S. Open. Phil Mickelson didn't get his major winning ways underway to well into his 30s. If the championship lacked star power, it created an opportunity for several young Americans to rise to the challenge and strut their stuff under the spotlight. He tied with Japanese World No. 4 Hideki Matsuyama who shot a six-under 66.

278: Xander Schauffele (66-73-70-69), Bill Haas (72-68-69-69), Rickie Fowler (65-73-68-72). Only Tiger Woods (-12, 2000), Rory McIIroy (-16, 2011) and Martin Kaymer (-9, 2014) have finished with a score of -9 or lower. He ended up tied for fifth, shooting a 10 under overall. He opened with a pair of tap-in birdies and putted for birdie on every hole but the par-3 13th. Thomas finished tied for ninth at 8 under.

By winning the U.S. Open, Koepka took home $2.1 million this week alone.

Low amateur Scottie Scheffler and Cameron Champ of Texas A&M were also impressive.

"It was a long phone call", Koepka said, with a hint of facetiousness.

Nonetheless, after finishing his final round on Sunday, Stricker said he felt the love of the standing ovation from Wisconsinites in the crowd as he walked off the 18th green with his wife, Nicki, who was his caddy for the week.

He won that tournament, made it to the regular European Tour, and then made it home to the PGA Tour. That score would have won all but two of the previous 116 renditions of this championship.

Mickelson and Fowler won on that occasion, although Koepka was at least able to land a verbal blow by telling Mickelson about how he had once chased him for an autograph at the Masters.

"To be honest, I'm not a big golf nerd", Koepka said in 2015.

Koepka credits staying patient for his victory.

A one-time victor no longer, Koepka has set his sights even higher, adding: 'We started out this year and I thought I needed to win multiple times and a major. But I think what was underestimated was how well he knew me, how well he knew my game.

"That's probably one of the coolest things I've ever experienced and to do it on Father's Day was pretty neat". Not a big fan of losing.

"I was like, 'I don't even want to play. It was something I thought was important, just to stay focussed and keep the pedal down".
