Jose Mourinho accused of 3.3 million euro tax fraud in Spain

Mourinho left Real Madrid in 2013 to manage English Premier League club Chelsea for a second spell before signing with United in 2016.

These earnings are said to have come from image rights.

Real Madrid star Ronaldo was last week accused of evading 14.7 million euros through offshore companies and will appear before a judge on July 31, judicial sources told AFP.

Ronaldo's willingness to leave Real Madrid and Spain has been partially blamed on his being chased by the tax man.

Barcelona and Brazilian star Neymar is also facing allegations of corruption and fraud over his transfer to the Spanish club in 2013 - a case which also involves his parents. But the tax authorities later found that some of the information presented in that settlement was incorrect, the prosecutors said.

In three years with Real Madrid, Mourinho won La Liga (2012) and the Spanish Cup (2011). Mourinho, 54, allegedly owes the Spanish tax authorities €3.3 million ($3.7 million).

A prosecutor claimed Mourinho benefited from not declaring his income from the use of image rights.

"The Spanish Government in turn, through the Tax Department, issued a certificate in which it attested that he had regularised his position and was in compliance with all his tax obligations".

The accusations against Ronaldo have caused speculation in Portugal and Spain that he is considering leaving the country to play elsewhere.

Lionel Messi was previous year convicted of defrauding the Spanish state in unpaid taxes on image rights.

Ronaldo has denied any wrongdoing.

Four-time Ballon d'Or victor Ronaldo is accused of diverting €150m of advertising revenue and image rights through a shell company in the British Virgin Islands, a tax haven.

Barcelona's Lionel Messi was also sentenced to 21 months in prison for tax fraud last year, although the fact that the sentence was less than two years, along with Messi's clean criminal record, meant the Argentinian did not ever go to jail.
