Iran Launches Missiles Into Eastern Syria

"Based on credible information, the missile operation against Daesh has been successful", Revolutionary Guards spokesman General Ramezan Sharif said on the elite force's Sepahnews website, using an Arabic acronym for IS.

It claimed the attack killed a "big number of terrorists" and damaged their equipment and weapons.

Most of the missiles missed their mark, and only one landed on its intended target despite claims by Iran's military that it struck an Islamic State command center and suicide vehicle bomb operation. Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said the strikes highlight the benefits of Iran's missile program.

But it was also meant to show that "Iran, in its fight against terrorism, needs missiles - and sanctions have no influence on its defence policies". He wrote that the strikes demonstrated Iran's missile capabilities to those "who sent terrorists to Tehran" and that Iran's "unexpected" response "was a deep message for the supporters of terrorists". According to the Times of Israel, citing Israeli intelligence sources, the missile was the Shahab-3, which is based on the North Korean Nodong-1 missile.

Also on Sunday, Iran's Revolutionary Guards Corps launched six mid-range missiles at targets in Syria, hoping to punish ISIS forces responsible for the terror attacks in Teheran two weeks ago. The regional and worldwide sponsors of the terrorists must receive the revealing message of the assault, ' he said.

The Regime announced that it was targeting the headquarters of ISIS, who claimed responsibility for the terror attacks in Tehran which killed 18 people earlier this month.

Sputnik Iliya Pitalev War Averted?'US Probably Doesn't Want to Get Into a Fight With Russia in Syria

Shiite-majority Iran and Sunni-majority Saudi Arabia have always been embroiled in a sectarian feud.

"Terrorists must know that the Islamic Republic, as a powerful country in the region and the world, will not tolerate their destabilizing acts", Boroujerdi said.

"And, of course, we need to see this in the wider geopolitical context: it will be very interesting what the reaction is going to be from countries such as Saudi Arabia, the United States and Israel, because Iran is saying it can retaliate and it will".

The US and Iran, meanwhile, are supporting opposite sides in Syria's civil war. The U.S. recently deployed a truck-mounted missile system into Syria as Assad's forces cut off the advance of America-backed rebels along the Iraqi border.

Iranian officials threatened more strikes.

In another manifestation of how the rivalries in Syria are playing out, a USA combat plane on Sunday shot down a Syrian-regime combat aircraft south of the town of Tabqah that had dropped bombs near the American-backed militia, according to a statement from the US-led coalition.
