Intel drones, virtual reality headed to 2018 Olympics

Intel, which has been partnering with sports organizations to show the potential of its technology, plans to provide real-time virtual reality viewing for the Pyeongchang Olympics, and will also offer drone technology to give viewers before unseen views of events and opening and closing ceremony.

Intel drone light show technology will create never-seen-before images in the sky.

Intel has announced that it will be working with the International Olympic Committee to provide technology to ehance the Olympics Games right through to 2024, with a focus on providing communications infrastructure support such as 5G, and also providing platforms for virtual reality (VR) and 360-degree content. Last year, Intel participated in the X Games, outfitting BMX bikes with modules to track data on in-air rotations, jump height, jump distance, speed and force on landing. "Now, in this digital age and with the cutting edge technology of Intel, athletes, fans and spectators can all experience this in a very different and innovative way". For example, Intel said home viewers will be able to choose viewing points at Olympic venues, such as front row seats, through virtual reality and 360 video. Intel's global rights will also include the Tokyo 2020, Beijing 2022 and the Olympic Games in 2024 in either Los Angeles of Paris.

The partnership with Intel came together relatively fast, which implies there was an urgency to have something in place by the Winter Olympics next year. “Through this close collaboration with the Olympic family, we will accelerate the adoption of technology for the future of sports on the worlds largest athletic stage.”.

Intel is joining The Olympic Partner (TOP) program through 2024 with the goal of enhancing the Olympic Games through its technology. Intel Chief Executive Brian Krzanich said negotiations started around the time of the Consumer Electronics Showcase in January.

The International Olympic Committee is a not-for-profit independent international organization made up of volunteers, which is committed to building a better world through sport. It redistributes more than 90 per cent of its income to the wider sporting movement, which means that every day the equivalent of 3.25 million U.S. dollars goes to help athletes and sports organisations at all levels around the world.
