Grenfell Tower relief effort has been effective, insists council leader

Protesters close to Grenfell Tower in west London after a fire engulfed the 24-storey building on Wednesday morning.

At least 58 people are "missing and presumed dead" following the fire at Grenfell Tower, police have confirmed.

Mr Cundy said the death toll may still change, but not as significantly as it has in recent days.

Khan described the fire as a "preventable accident that didn't need to happen", adding that the "tragedy we're seeing is a outcome of the mistakes and neglect from politicians from the council and from the government".

He said it had been "incredibly emotional working in there".

'It's hard to describe my feelings, because I can not imagine, and I would not want to put myself in the position of those families who have lost their loved ones.

Britain held a moment of silence for the victims on Monday, with emergency service workers at the site of the fire bowing their heads in respect.

More than 200 firefighters and 40 fire trucks were involved in operations to douse the blaze, which last for several hours.

Of the 58, he said 30 were confirmed dead.

British officials said Sunday that exterior cladding used in a recent renovation of the building may have been banned under United Kingdom building regulations. Authorities may never be able to identify some of the victims, he said.

Trade Minister Greg Hands said Sunday the government is carrying out an "urgent inspection" of the roughly 2,500 similar tower blocks across Britain to assess their safety, while an opposition lawmaker urged the government to quickly secure documents in the Grenfell renovation for the criminal investigation.

London mayor Sadiq Khan has said that tower blocks in the city built during the 1960s and 1970s could be torn down following the Grenfell Tower fire.

Sixteen "very ordinary people" voiced their concerns to the prime minister in an unprecedented Downing Street meeting and finally felt listened to, the Bishop of Kensington, Graham Tomlin said.

At a daily briefing with reporters, Mrs May's spokeswoman said the terms of reference of a public inquiry into the tower blaze were being drafted.

"People raised these concerns, people were expressing issues regarding the safety and unsafe living conditions", says Lancaster West Residents Association chairwoman Olesea Matcovschi.
