GOP senator blasts Trumpcare for stripping coverage from 'millions of Americans'

McConnell may have a tough job convincing enough Republican senators that the Senate bill improves on the House version.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell insists he wants a vote before the Fourth of July recess, leaving GOP leaders one week to win over more votes.

MARTIN: How do the Republicans get to the argument that this will actually bring costs down for consumers?

As expected, all Democrat senators have vowed to shut down the bill and have encouraged all senators to look past party lines to stop the bill from passing.

Senator Dean Heller (R-Nevada) is the latest conservative senator who expressed "serious concerns" over the bill's impact on Americans who rely on Medicaid for health care.

Realizing they're outnumbered, Democrats and their liberal allies were planning events around the US over the next few days aimed at building public opposition to the bill. "Not only health care, but mental health services", Stokes, a former Democratic mayoral candidate, said.

"No argument against Trumpcare is more eloquent than the grave consequences it means in people's lives", she wrote colleagues.

"This bill will result in higher costs, less care and millions of Americans will lose their health insurance, particularly through Medicaid", Schumer said.

Rand Paul, who has rejected the plan along with fellow Republican Senators Ted Cruz, Mike Lee and Ron Johnson, said fundamental problems remained that would leave taxpayers subsidizing health insurance companies.

Health insurers criticized the steep cuts to Medicaid proposed in the Senate bill to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act as "too much, too fast".

In an interview with Fox News Channel, Trump was asked about the four conservatives opposing the bill.

Trump, who said on Wednesday he wanted a health plan "with heart", told reporters at the White House that healthcare legislation would require "a little negotiation, but it's going to be very good".

ROVNER: Well, the piece of the Affordable Care Act that's most at stake is what we've just been talking about, the people who buy their own insurance in the individual market.

Beyond the Medicaid cuts, Heller also said he was also concerned with the Senate bill's rollback, via waivers, of Obamacare's Essential Health Benefits.

Maine Sen. Susan Collins and some others are anxious about the bill rolling back Obamacare's expansion of Medicare and putting limits on federal funding of the program.

He celebrated the bill's narrow passage last month in a Rose Garden event with House Republican leaders.

The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office said that under the House bill, 23 million fewer people would have coverage by 2026. The CBO announced on Thursday that it will release figures on the Senate plan sometime early next week.

The measure calls for reducing money for Medicaid. The enhanced federal financing that pays for the expansion would disappear entirely in 2024.

Another thing the Senate credits do is that they go down to more poor people, but the credits themselves will be smaller.

The Senate plan lowers premium costs for some Americans, but many older Americans would have to pay higher premiums.
