France's Macron wins strong parliament majority

The far-right Front National, which now has two seats in parliament, was predicted to win up to eight seats, better than its first-round showing had indicated.

The election was for the National Assembly, the lower house in French politics.

Few had any confidence in the solutions that the political candidates were putting forward on the campaign trail, and many feared that France was about to succumb to the same furies that had led British citizens to turn their backs on the European Union and American voters to elect Donald Trump.

Ms Le Pen said she would "fight with all necessary means the harmful projects of the government", especially what she called Mr Macron's pro-European, pro-migrant policies.

"Through their vote, a wide majority of the French have chosen hope over anger", said Prime Minister Edouard Philippe, reiterating his "total" determination to work on major reforms in the coming months.

France voted a record number of women into parliament on Sunday, thanks largely to President Emmanuel Macron's decision to field a gender-balanced candidate list for his victorious Republic on the Move (LREM) party.

Marine Le Pen, Macron's arch-rival on the far right, may get four to eight seats, they said.

Turn-out was also thought to be down.

PARIS French far-right leader Marine Le Pen said on Sunday her party had won at least six seats in parliament, including her own, although a key aide was eliminated in a night President Emmanuel Macron's party swept the elections with a huge majority.

Republicans leader Francois Baroin declared his party the main opposition and wished Macron "good luck" because he said he wants France to succeed.

Comey said he believed Trump's advice to be a direction and thus felt uncomfortable by it. Although Rosenstein's memo was extremely critical of former FBI Director James B.

The Socialist party was the biggest loser, expecting to shed more than 200 seats and hold only around 34 seats - again, better than forecast, but still a drubbing.

At home, Macron has redrawn the political map by attracting moderates from the left and the right to his new party which has created a new centrist force at the heart of French politics.

The election was the fourth in less than two months which resulted in a historically low voter turnout.

On the right, the conservatives won 133 seats, making it the biggest opposition party.

"(Macron). said: "this is your responsibility as well - we need you.

At midday during the first round voting last Sunday, turnout was 19.2 percent.

REM won 32 percent of the votes cast in the first round, but this represented only about 15 percent of registered voters.

Le Pen's nemesis, the ultra-left Jean-Luc Melenchon, vowed a "social coup d'etat", saying Macron's plans to reform labor laws amount to "destruction of the social order". Experts partly blamed voter fatigue following the May election of Mr Macron, plus voter disappointment with politics.

They predicted the conservative Republicans and their allies would form the largest opposition bloc with 125 to 131 seats, while the Socialist Party, in power for the past five years, and its partners would secure 41 to 49 seats, their lowest ever in the postwar Fifth Republic.
