First of their kind, temperature-sensitive stamps released

Take before and after photos of the stamp pane with a group of friends or children placing their thumbs on the black disc of the eclipse to reveal the moon.

The stamp, which uses thermochromic ink, commemorates the upcoming August 21 eclipse and is available nationwide.

So if you didn't make travel plans to see what some are referring to as "the Great American Eclipse" when we told you about it last summer, now is the time to book.

The U.S. Postal Service has officially unveiled a first-of-its kind stamp that transforms with the touch of a finger and is dedicated to this summer's total solar eclipse.

The moment of a total solar eclipse - when the moon blocks Earth's view of the sun completely while exposing the sun's corona - is unique in that it's the only time you can gaze up at the phenomenon without damaging your eyes, NASA says.

The August event will be the first time since 1979 that a total solar eclipse will be visible from mainland United States, according to Espenak's website, MrEclipse.com.

More than half a million people - and possibly as many as 2 million - will flock to SC to see the eclipse.

The back of the stamp pane shows a map tracking the coming eclipse's path.

Viewers in Charleston will see the eclipse at 2:45 p.m.

The Total Eclipse of the Sun Forever stamp, designed by Antonio Alcalá, uses a photograph of a total solar eclipse captured in Jalu, Libya, on March 29, 2006, by Fred Espenak, a retired NASA astrophysicist at Goddard Space Flight Center and an eclipse expert.

Thermochromic inks are vulnerable to UV light and should be kept out of direct sunlight as much as possible to preserve this special effect.

A new study finds only 1 in 4 teens and young adults with opioid addiction receive recommended treatment medication despite having good health insurance. This is first stamp to use what's called Thermo-Chromic ink.

After applying the first-day-of-issue postmark, the Postal Service will return the envelopes through the mail.
