Ex-nurse expected to plead guilty to 8 first-degree murder charges

Elizabeth Wettlaufer enters the Provincial courthouse in Woodstock, Ontario on June 1, 2017.

A Canadian former nurse accused of killing eight seniors in her care pleaded guilty Thursday to first-degree murder.

She also faces four charges of attempted murder and two counts of aggravated assault, also involving elderly and long-term care patients in the region.

All the incidents occurred between 2007 and 2014 in three Ontario long-term care facilities where Wettlaufer worked as a registered nurse and at a private home.

In January, the six additional charges were laid against Wettlaufer related to seniors in her care.

Wettlaufer admitted to killing Caressant Care residents James Silcox, Maurice Granat, Gladys Millard, Helen Matheson, Mary Zurawinski, Helen Young, and Maureen Pickering.

Court documents, included in a search warrant obtained by The London Free Press, pointed to the administration of insulin overdoses to the patients. Court papers allege she injected them with insulin.

Redacted court documents released in March - which were filed by police in an application to obtain records - have indicated Wettlaufer was sacked in 2014 from a nursing home in Woodstock, where some of her alleged victims lived, after an incident in which she allegedly incorrectly medicated and over-medicated a resident who "experienced distress" as a result.

The four victims of alleged attempted murder are Wayne Hedges, 57; Michael Priddle, 63; Sandra Towler, 77; and Beverly Bertram, 68.

Current stamp duty exemptions for first home buyers apply only to new homes up to $550,000 and vacant land valued up to $350,000. Ms Berejiklian said the stamp duty deal was part of a comprehensive package of measures to support first homebuyers.

Toronto Police began investigating Wettlaufer last fall after they were tipped off to information she'd given to a psychiatric hospital in Toronto. Wettlaufer was charged with aggravated assault against 87-year-old Clotilde Adriano and 90-year-old Albina Demedeiros.

Redacted court documents released in March indicated Wettlaufer was sacked in 2014 from Caressant Care after being accused of making repeated medication-related errors.

Wettlaufer is charged in the deaths of eight seniors — seven at Woodstocks Caressant Care Nursing Home and one at Londons Meadowpark Nursing Home.

She had been a registered nurse since 1995 but surrendered her medical license just prior to her arrest. Later that month, Toronto police contact Woodstock police about a possible homicide investigation. One of her conditions is not to possess any drugs, including insulin. 2007, "hoping he would die", the prosecution said.

A source close to the case tells The Canadian Press that Wettlaufer is scheduled to plead guilty to the eight murder counts today.

News reports point to an expanded police probe that includes Paris, Brantford and Port Dover, after police say they don't believe there are more homicide victims.

Wettlaufer has been housed at the Vanier Centre for Women in Milton.

Wettlaufer also told a lawyer about everything in 2014, who advised her it was in her best interests to stay silent, court heard.

Police exhume two bodies - one in London, another in Innerkip - of two alleged victims for forensic examination.
