EU, China summit to back Paris deal regardless of Trump

U.S. president Donald Trump has said he will announce his decision on the Paris climate accord on Thursday as fears strengthened in the last few days that he will pull out of the historic worldwide agreement to cut greenhouse gases.

The Republican vowed at the time to "cancel" the Paris deal within 100 days of becoming president on January 20, part of an effort to bolster U.S. oil and coal industries.

Trump, a Republican who has claimed global warming is a hoax, has moved quickly since taking office to delay or block restrictions on burning of fossil fuels enacted by his predecessor that he claims are holding back economic growth.

That leaves Trump with two clear choices: withdraw from the Paris agreement or revise the USA emissions targets downward to a more achievable level while remaining in the pact.

The exit could take as long as one to nearly four years.

At the time of the Paris accord, Rudd was Britain's energy and climate change minister.

It's clear from Trump's first four months in power that there's no way the USA can deliver on its initial commitment to the Paris agreement, made during the Obama administration, to cut emissions by 2025 to about a third of what the U.S. emitted back in 2005.

"When Australia makes a commitment to a global agreement, we followed through and that's exactly what we're doing", Mr Turnbull said.

They argue the pact, and by extension the world, would be better off without U.S. involvement in the accord.

China is the top emitter of carbon dioxide and the United States is second.

"Unlike its predecessor treaty, the Kyoto Protocol, the Paris deal was meant to be nonbinding, so that countries could tailor their climate plans to their domestic situations and alter them as circumstances changed".

Earlier in the day, Trump said only that he'd been "hearing from a lot of people, both ways". For example, there are no sanctions if the United States breaks its promise of reducing greenhouse gas emissions 26% to 28% below 2005 levels by 2025. It was "less about the environment" than about other countries getting an "unfair advantage" over the US, he added. A White House official says President Donald Trump is expected to withdraw the United States from the.

China and the European Union will seek on Friday to buttress the agreement.

Juncker further said that the European stakeholder's attempts to explain the importance of the climate accord have failed.

Any delay in United States efforts to halt greenhouse gas emissions could cost the country and the world in the long term, scientists say. The administration's debate has triggered an outpouring of lobbying from corporate America as well, as Apple, ExxonMobil and other major companies have strongly supported the accord. For the president, a withdrawal would reflect his "America First" approach to policy, unencumbered by worldwide obligations.
