Drought-breaking cricket win gets positive spin in Pakistan

Pakistan dominated with both bat and ball to thrash a rather off-colour India by 180 runs and lift the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy on Sunday.

Embarrassed by India in their opening match, Pakistan astonishingly turned the tables on their arch-rivals to win their maiden Champions Trophy.

They were eventually dismissed for 158 in reply to Pakistan's 338 for four, which featured Fakhar Zaman's 114, the left-handed opener's maiden one-day worldwide hundred coming in just his fourth match at this level.

Ironically, the mark they had to top was the 322 for three made by Sri Lanka in the seven-wicket win over India at The Oval on June 8 - the lone group-stage loss suffered by Kohli's side.

ICC Champions Trophy 2017 winners Pakistan have four players in the selected line-up, with Fakhar Zaman, who scored a match-winning 114 in the final, chosen to open the batting with India's Shikhar Dhawan. A disappointing day but I have a smile on my face because of the way we played across the tournament.

"We dusted ourselves off after the defeat to India at Edgbaston and came back superbly", added the South African after Pakistan's first major global tournament success since they won the 2009 World Twenty20 in England. Hopefully, this win, everyone will remember not [just] today or tomorrow, but for a very long time. When we arrived here, we were ranked 8th, and now, we are the champions.

"I was lucky with the no ball", he said. India and Pakistan are meeting each other for the first time in an ICC 50-over final.

"Early wickets are never good, especially in a chase", Kohli said.

Pakistan leapfrogs to sixth place in ICC ODI rankings
He raised hopes of pulling off a one-man Indian Houdini act as he hit three successive sixes to reach his half century. They entered the tournament as the lowest ranked team .

India captain Kohli conceded Pakistan were worthy winners and, while he claimed to be proud of his players, his admission that the new champions played with more passion was a damning indictment. "All the credit goes to the entire team, they all worked really hard", the Pakistan captain said.

The Daily Dawn noted Amir's three wickets in his opening spell, which included the key wicket of Virat Kohli, while describing Fakhar's century in only his fourth ODI as scintillating.

The collapse continued when left-handed opener Dhawan was caught behind off Amir.

There was to be no way back for India, who subsequently slumped to 72-6 and only made it to 158 thanks to a stunning, 43-ball 76 from Hardik Pandya.

Sports fans in India got to witness two contrasting results on Sunday in two different sporting arenas but in the same city.

The only bright spot for India was the performance of Pandya, who clubbed six sixes in a thrilling counter-attack before being run out in a mix-up with Ravindra Jadeja.

Fakhar got another life, and the Pakistan opener embraced it.
