Candidates in tight Georgia race make final bid for votes

A special congressional election in Georgia is now billing at an estimated $40 million and counting between Democrat Jon Ossoff and Republican Karen Handel, making it easily the most expensive in history, NBC News reported.

Georgia's 6th district encompasses much of suburban Atlanta and until recently was considered a shoe-in for Republicans.

Handel faces Jon Ossoff, a 30-year-old Democrat and former congressional aide who does not even live in the district.

Ossoff and his Republican rival, the former Georgia secretary of state Karen Handel, spent the weekend and Monday crisscrossing the state as the race went down to the wire.

Trump even tweeted out his endorsement Monday morning. That forced him into a June 20 runoff with Handel, the top Republican vote-getter.

The ad tying Ossoff to the bloody rampage isn't the only controversial last-minute spot airing in the district. Ossoff has said the address is close to Emory University, where his fiance attends medical school.

Handel and McCarthy started the day at a breakfast restaurant, shaking hands and urging people to vote on Tuesday.

"It's kind of a referendum", he said over a platter of pulled pork. In special congressional elections in Kansas and Montana they've strained to see green shoots.

House Dems question Flynn disclosures of Middle East travel
The letter from the Democrats otherwise does not raise the president's trip or attempt to link the visit to Flynn's conduct. The letter states that he reported traveling to Saudi Arabia with a friend for six days to speak at a conference.

Handel maintained some distance from Trump in the primary but has fully embraced his support and agenda since, including a joint fundraiser.

An attack ad running in the election also tried to link Ossoff to the shooting.

It emerged that Mr Hodgkinson, who died of his injuries following a gunfight with police, was a volunteer for Senator Bernie Sanders' presidential campaign and promoted anti-Republican rhetoric on social media. President Donald Trump carried the district by 19 points in 2016, according to calculations by Daily Kos Elections, and Mulvaney beat his opponent by a similar margin. "I think that those concerns have only grown over time. I'm focused on bringing fresh leadership, accountability, and bipartisan problem solving to Washington to cut wasteful spending and grow metro Atlanta's economy into the Silicon Valley of the South". He supports a higher minimum wage, with caveats; she's opposed.

"We let that happen", she said. "I needed to do something to change it".

Palmer, who has campaigned for Ossoff, recalled stories of Ossoff yard signs being yanked from the ground, and a man in a vehicle giving an Ossoff volunteer the middle finger followed by the Nazi salute outside of an early voting center.

"When we come home in the evening there's always generally something hanging at the door, which doesn't bother me but it does bother me them coming and banging on the door", he said.

The ad, funded by a little-known group called the Principled PAC, opens with sounds of gunshots and footage of U.S. Rep. Steve Scalise being wheeled away on a stretcher after he and other members of the Republican congressional baseball team were ambushed by a lone gunman while practicing in a Washington suburb. "You have a national tragedy that has united people".
