Canada denies it wants G20 to drop mention of Paris climate pact

"Trump sending Scott Pruitt to the environmental ministers meeting for only one day was a pathetic and failed attempt to save face following his historic mistake of withdrawing the US from the Paris agreement", John Coequyt, Sierra Club global climate policy director, said.

"I believe engaging in worldwide discussion is of the utmost importance to the United States when it comes to environmental issues", he said in the statement.

BOLOGNA, Italy (AP) - Top environment officials from the Group of Seven wealthy democracies met Sunday in Italy amid ongoing differences between the US and other members of the club over how to deal with climate change.

EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt attended the G7 meeting but left the summit one day early on Saturday, after other countries bashed Trump's decision to leave the Paris accord.

On June 1, President Donald Trump announced the United States is pulling out of the Paris climate accord. Any new USA administration could rejoin within 30 days, Kerry said.

The environment talks echoed May's G7 leaders' summit in Sicily and the G7 energy ministers' meeting in Rome in April.

"We need to go forward with implementing the accord and helping countries translate their national programme into their development policies so we can get to 2018 and have a first assessment of where we stand", she said.

May announced a £5 million package to help the victims, and promised to re-house majority in the Kensington and Chelsea borough. Police have said the recovery process could take weeks, and warned some of the bodies may be too burned to be identified.

At a meeting in Italy, environmental ministers from G-7 nations released a lengthy communique on climate change, including detailed commitments from each nation to reduce greenhouse gas emissions as part of their promises under the Paris deal.

Erik Solheim, head of the UN Environment Programme, said yestreday that the six other G7 countries shared an "absolute determination" to keep climate action on track "whatever happens in the White House".

Pruitt made a habit in recent months of saying there is a US trend toward lower emissions from a peak in 2007, thanks to the glut of fracked natural gas pushing out coal as a source of electric power.

The United States' partners in the G-7 club of wealthy democracies vowed Sunday to pursue efforts to curb climate change despite a rift caused by the American withdrawal from the Paris accord. No other nation has said it'll follow suit, and even coal-reliant India has said it will seek to exceed the Paris targets.

The world's largest economies are divided over how to tackle global warming following the withdrawal of the US from the Paris climate accord this month.

The U.S. did participate in other aspects of the 15-page statement on sustainable development and private sector financing of climate change adaptation.

So, we must all redouble our efforts now, because as the Irish Environmental Pillar stated in condemning the Trump decision, 'We have a duty to generations to come to leave the planet in a condition that is fit for all life and not riven with starvation, refugee crises, water shortages and war'.
