BJP playing vote bank politics by nominating Dalit for president: Shiv Sena

Earlier in the day, Sena spokesperson Sanjay Raut said Shah called up Thackeray after the NDA's presidential choice was decided by the BJP's parliamentary board meeting, and sought the party's support for Kovind.

Other Sena leaders and BJP state President Raosaheb Patil-Danve stayed out of the 75-minute meeting. Shah, along with Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, visited Thackeray's residence "Matoshree" and held a close-door meeting, which started around 10 am and lasted almost 75 minutes. He said the BJP wanted to have a candidate elected unopposed by consensus from all political parties.

Bhagwat, 66, recently said he is not interested in the president's post.

The Shiv Sena today treaded cautiously on the issue of beef ban, saying the "Centre should take states into confidence before arriving at a stand on it".

On Monday, the BJP announced that its candidate for the presidential polls that will be held on July 17 is Bihar governor Ramnath Kovind.

A Shiv Sena leader who requested anonymity, however, conceded that the party had no option but "to support Kovind". The Sena's first preference was RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat. After Bhagwat ruled himself out, it pitched scientist MS Swaminathan.

In his address to party faithfuls, Mr. Thackeray took exception to Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis' allegation that "a political hand" was behind the recent farmer agitations in the state. The BJP president urged the Sena to support an NDA nominee for the president's post.

"Amit Shah says Maharashtra Government will last its five-year term". He also dared the BJP to hold midterm elections in Maharashtra. Several Sena leaders said that this was also the time when it could renegotiate its role in the NDA.

The Board formed a three-man panel - comprising senior ministers Rajnath Singh, Venkaiah Naidu and Arun Jaitley - to select their presidential nominee.

BJP president Amit Shah, along with Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, visited Uddhav Thackeray's residence "Matoshree" and held a meeting, which started at around 10 am and lasted for almost 75 minutes.

"Shah and his party are more anxious about a mid-term election. We give them our best wishes".
