Attorney General Session next up for Capitol Hill scrutiny

Sessions, an early and ardent supporter of U.S. President Donald Trump's 2016 election campaign, would be the highest government official to testify before the Senate intelligence committee in its probe of allegations that Russian Federation may have sought to interfere in the election.

US Attorney General Jeff Sessions, whose contacts with Russian officials during the US presidential campaign have sparked questions, heads to Congress next week where he is expected to face a grilling.

Members of the Intelligence Committee said they wanted Mr. Sessions to recount what happened during and after the February 14 Oval Office meeting where, according to Mr. Comey, President Trump pressured him to drop the F.B.I. investigation into Michael T. Flynn, the former national security adviser.

It promises to be yet another explosive week in Washington, D.C as the Senate Intelligence Committee continues to investigate allegations that Russian Federation influenced the 2016 US presidential election. "We've obviously pressed the White House", he said.

He wrote that "it is important that I have an opportunity to address these matters in the appropriate forum" and he would have his deputy deal with the budget hearings. Tuesday's original hearing was going to be public, while the testimony before the Intel Committee is expected to be a closed session.

In a letter seen by Reuters, Sessions told Senator Richard Shelby, chairman of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, Science and Related Agencies, that the intelligence committee is the "most appropriate" place to address matters that came up during Comey's hearing on Thursday.

"Whether it's illegal is a whole 'nother issue, and that's up to the independent counsel", she said on CNN's "State of the Union", referring to Robert S. Mueller III, the special counsel leading the F.B.I. investigation. Mr. Leahy is the senior Democrat on the Appropriations Committee, as well as a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, which oversees the Justice Department. Republican Senator James Lankford, a member of the intelligence panel, said on CBS' "Face the Nation" that decision had not been finalised, but, "I assume that this will be public". You need to testify before both in public.

"Atty Gen. Sessions provided false testimony in response to questions from me and @SenFranken about his contacts with Russian officials", Leahy tweeted Saturday night.

Comey said he felt the President directed him to let go of the investigation into fired National Security Adviser Michael Flynn.

In March, he acknowledged he had contacts with the Russian ambassador and rescued himself from a federal investigation into contacts between Russia and Trump's campaign.

Sessions stepped aside in March from the federal investigation into contacts between Russia and the campaign after acknowledging that had met twice past year with the Russian ambassador to the U.S. He had told lawmakers at his January confirmation hearing that he had not met with Russians during the campaign.

Comey's dramatic testimony drew invective from his former boss on Twitter, with Trump dismissing him as a leaker on Friday and a coward yesterday.
