Passengers suffered broken bones, cuts to the scalp and soft tissue injuries, the Xinhua state news agency reported.

A China Eastern Airlines Airbus A330 aircraft sits on the tarmac at Sydney International Airport in Australia.

A slightly injured passenger surnamed Zhang was quoted as saying: "We felt strong turbulence twice and minor turbulence three times". It added that all passengers should fasten safety belts during flights for safety.

It said that during the turbulence, several passengers' heads and shoulders collided with the luggage racks, some luggage racks broke from the impact, and some luggage fell off the racks and hit customers.

China Eastern Airlines later said it was crucial passengers wear seatbelts as flights descend. The turnout at 1500 GMT on Sunday was at its lowest for the second round of parliamentary elections at the same time of day since at least 1997, according to historical data given on the Interior Ministry. "We were lucky the plane did not crash".

But a source close to the President told CNN's Jim Acosta that Trump has been advised to avoid such a dramatic move. Trump has expressed increasing dissatisfaction with the Justice Department since Mueller's appointment.

"Many people were injured, and among them, many had not buckled up".

The plane landed safely an hour later and those who needed medical help were taken to hospital, Xinhua said.

The flight crew took necessary measures and the flight landed safely, China Eastern said in a statement on Sunday morning.

This latest incident involving China Eastern happened a week after another plane in the fleet - which was bound for Shanghai - diverted because of a huge hole in a part of its left engine.
